Emergency Preparedness Discussed on Portsmouth this Week

The latest edition of Portsmouth this Week, the voice of Portsmouth Town Hall, features Portsmouth Emergency Management Agency Director John King and EMA Internet Public Information Team Leader Rich Talipsky discussing the need to be prepared for storms and other emergencies. We are currently in the middle of the Hurricane season and now is the time to think about being prepared, King indicated. "You have to be prepared to be on your own for 72 hours in the event of a major storm", said King, "and now is the time to think through what your specific needs will be."
Director King outlined four components for being prepared. They include:

    - Be Informed

    - Make A Plan

A big part of this is staying informed on upcoming weather and other potential emergency concerns. Rich Talipsky, EMA IPI Team Leader, indicated that the Portsmouth EMA website at www.portsmouthemergency.com was an excellent source of both current information and planning tips. "The website includes a blog that provides updated and current information about emerging problems, but it also contains links to many other sites which will be useful for planning", he stated.

King  went on to discuss the other components of being prepared and indicated that the Town is also producing an emergency preparedness brochure which has important telephone numbers, and other critical information. This should soon be available at the Town Hall and other public sites around Portsmouth and is something every resident should get. See a copy attached to this blog post.

King concluded with a call for more volunteers to help out when an emergency strikes. There are several ways to do this, as indicated on the EMA website.
