On the article Bomb Threat Prompts Police Search at Portsmouth High School

ReplyJill,
I understand what you’re saying. We sent our kids too. But I can understand their discomfort in the salutation. And again…you just never know. Maybe the note discovered by the custodian was intended to be discovered later, in the morning when the school was full of students…and maybe there never was actually an explosive device. BUT, when the school would have been evacuated upon the note’s discovery…a shooter could be hiding in the woods. Scary. And now…nothing happened yesterday and here we have yet another threat. Are there really still kids dumb enough to think this can be considered a harmless prank in light what recent events? -

Sadly yes. Apparently many of the kids are quite nervous about it and is why they weren’t in school. With all deadly incidents that have happened at schools around the country in the current high schoolers lifetime…I’d be nervous too. And, what if they did just brush it aside as a prank and then something did happen. IF you were in the school administration would you brush it aside?

I don’t want to pay the tolls but I’m realistic too. Going over the Mt. Hope Bridge and taking Metacom Ave. in Bristol will probably cost about the same…but be worse for the environment…after burning excess gas while sitting in the already heavy traffic on Metacom Ave.

Hey John Gotti – care to guess what age group in the military has the highest rate of alcohol-related incidents? Hint – it’s the 17 to 25 year olds. And that’s not counting the underage drinking itself as an “incident.” The incident rate is even higher than their civilian counterparts.

On the article How Could Newport Solve Its Parking Problems?
TAMORI

ReplyI know there is a concerted effort to do so…but make the island more bicycle-friendly with a safe, easy bicycle route from the northern end of the island into Newport. In the summertime I see lots of cars coming onto the island with multiple bicycles mounted on the back. Presumably they’re parking somewhere in/around Newport and then touring the city on bike. Although future tolling may impact it…but if a safe, efficient bike path were created from Portsmouth into Newport…those people could park in points north of the city in park-and-ride lots and then bicycle into the city. For example, parking in the gravel lot on Burma Road at Greene Lane and riding into the city. That’s only about five miles on bike. But as is, it’s not an easy commute for anyone other than a dedicated cyclist. I know the new bike lanes are there, along Coddington Highway, but those just mysteriously end without warning in the middle of nowhere. It seems those who are trying to tackle the Newport parking problem are looking for ways to accommodate MORE cars. Maybe it’s time to think outside the parking garage and look at ways of accommodating FEWER cars and more bicycles.

ReplyHmmm. The more I think about it, there must be some satire to this. Why would a Democrat introduce legislation to specifically prevent cruelty to elephants…the Republican Party icon.

We all know that the “early 90s” was not before "the web." Al Gore invented it a few years earlier.
