Skipper Ken Read is too superstitious to tell you what he’s superstitious about. But whether he’s knocking on wood or reciting Grateful Dead lyrics under his breath, we hope he keeps it up.

Considered to be one of the world’s most accomplished racers, Read was at the helm of PUMA’s il mostro throughout the entire Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009.

“We weren’t perfect in the last race. I’m looking to use that knowledge and experience to do better this time around.”

The U.S.-born Read has twice helmed America’s Cup programs in 2000 and 2003 and was named “United States Rolex Yachtsman of the Year” twice (1985, 1995) and has 46 World, North American, and National Championships to his credit.

Read grew up sailing in Barrington, Rhode Island, and is a graduate of Boston University, where he was a three-time All-American and College Sailor of the Year. He is a member of the BU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Yet despite his many sailing trophies, Read admits that his greatest accomplishment in life is his daughter, Tory. Along with his wife, Kathy, the Read family makes their home in Newport, Rhode Island.
