On Friday night I broke my leg in three places at the Homecoming game. The ER nurse used trauma shears to cut off my uniform. It was the worst of times. My English teacher gave us a quote to ponder last week. It said, ”Storms make the oak grow deeper roots.” I hope that is true because a mighty storm has come to me. The next day I had a cast from my hip to my toe. Lying in pain in the hospital, surrounded by my family, and wallowing in fear, I received a special visitor from the Hundred Acre Wood. Pete Hunziker and a group of my teammates came to see me. Pete was dressed as Winnie-the-Pooh, the costume he had worn for Halloween. Do you know how courageous a high school kid has to be to wear that costume out in public, let alone in Hotel Hasbro were every kid on the 6th floor wanted to sit on his lap and touch his ears? Don’t be fooled. That honey loving bear is a fierce competitor who caught my touchdown pass on Friday night. He played the ball perfectly and came down with it in the endzone beating the best corner in Division-3 in the process. That’s what football is all about. Team. Courage. Being there for each other. If my future looks cloudy and fear gets the best of me, I think about Pooh bear and the guys I love to play football with. I dream about getting back there with them. I know how Christopher Robin felt. It’s so good to have friends.
