Local Officers Raise Money For Police Unity Tour

"We ride for those who died" is the motto that the members of the Police Unity Tour spoke of at the annual Sunday motorcycle ride.

In 1997, eighteen Police Officers rode their bikes 300 miles beginning in Florham Park, NJ and finished in Washington, DC. This year, 1,200 riders made that same 300 mile trip. Among them were Lt Mike Faria of the Middletown Police Department and Officer Joe Carroll of the Newport Police Department. They rode along with fellow officers and family members of fallen officers. Each rider is asked to raise money that is used to maintain the National Law Enforcement Memorial, the National Law Enforcement Museum, and given to families of officers killed in the line of duty. Local Officers Ask Bikers to Ride for the Fallen

A motorcycle ride through Portsmouth will help raise money for fallen police officers. Civilians and officers are encouraged to participate in the event on Sept. 9.

On Sept. 9, for the second year in a row, two Aquidneck Island police officers will bring a national event to a local level.   Every May, thousands of police officers sweat through the 300-mile, four day, Police Unity Tour, which is a bicycle ride from Florham Park, N.J. to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.   The event honors police officers who fell in the line of duty. Although that ride is only open to police officers, Lt. Mike Faria of the Middletown Police Department and Officer Joe Carroll of Newport, have organized a motorcycle ride that joins civilians and officers together, to raise awareness and money for the cause right here in Rhode Island. “Everyone is welcome,” said Faria.
