According to our results, Democratic influencers felt Obama has run a better ground campaign by a wide margin while a majority of Republican influencers surveyed said the ground campaign up to this point has been even. Barack Obama won Rhode Island’s 4 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. The Wall Street Journal along with the Associated Press has called the race in Rhode Island declaring Obama the winner. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Rhode Island. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections. The economy was a key issue for many voters in the state.

Voters will head to the polls this Election Day, Nov. 6. Polls will be open throughout town from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Where to Vote The following 8 polling sites will be open. Rhode Island state law allows people who have not registered to vote to cast a ballot of the top office.
Yes, Virginia, you can still vote for president on Election Day even if you didn't register. According to Rhode Island General Law 17-1-3, people who missed the voter registration dealine may vote for president/vice president only at their local Board of Canvassers on Election Day. In Portsmouth, you can do that at Town Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 6, during regular polling hours (7 a.m. to 8 p.m.). You will need to show an ID and complete a registration form. You will then be given a ballot for President/Vice President only. This is also for people who have moved to Portsmouth from another city or town in Rhode Island over a year ago but failed to change their address. One political candidate will miss his own election next week as he aids Hurricane Sandy victims.
One candidate running for the Portsmouth Town Council will miss next week's General Election — and opportunities to campaign days before — in order to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. Robert "Bob" Church, a Democratic candidate for the Portsmouth Town Council, was activated as a FEMA responder on Tuesday following Hurricane Sandy. He was called in to respond with the National Disaster Medical System. "We were originally headed for New Jersey, but diverted to New York for now," Church wrote in e-mail. His cell phone service is "spotty" in New York City, he said. "Have spent a day in Queens before being sent to Brooklyn. Question 4 on the Nov. 6 ballot asks residents whether the state should borrow $94 million tp build a new facility and renovate the existing one.
Edward Hanrahan has lived at the Rhode Island Veterans Home for eight years. He commends the staff for the service and care he receives, both of which he says are outstanding. What is not is the facility he lives in. "We're damn glad to be here on the whole; we get excellent care," the World War II veteran and bronze star winner said. "But we do need a new home. It's an old building ... problems with the sewers, problems with the pipes, and so many leaks in the roof. Buildings this old ... very few still standing."
