Not all meteorologists accept the name game, or acknowledge this storm.
You've probably heard occasional—but perhaps not frequent—references to this winter storm as "Saturn." While it makes for some good jokes about the planet, but rather, a pre-determined name The Weather Channel gave to this latest storm. If you missed it: The Weather Channel in November announced it would name "noteworthy winter storms" in the 2012-2013 winter season. Sure, snowstorms have been informally named after the fact (remember Snowtober?) This is the first season, however, that The Weather Channel is naming them as it does hurricanes and tropical storms. The Department of Health is asking private well owners to boil their water as a safety precaution.
The following is from a press release. Due to the excessive snow from the winter storm and from rainfall on Monday, some private wells may be impacted. Four Portsmouth residents - two adults and two children - jumped to their safety Friday night after a fire trapped them inside their Park Avenue home during the height of the storm.
Seven Portsmouth residents are lucky to be alive after a fire broke out outside a Park Avenue home during the height of the 2013 blizzard Friday night. In what could be described as the worst nightmare for Portsmouth firefighters, a 911 call came in at 11:29 p.m. After a couple hours of lights flickering, most Portsmouth residents lost power for good around 10:30 p.m. Friday. The 911 call described one of the worst possible scenarios for firefighters. A house was on fire. Seven people were trapped inside. A woman was transported to Newport Hospital on Sunday after a vehicle attempted to pass a snowplow.
A woman was transported by ambulance to Newport Hospital after she was injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon. Rescue crews received several 911 calls on Sunday at 3 p.m. after a two-vehicle crash occurred at 2121 West Main Road. According to Portsmouth Fire Deputy Chief Michael O'Brien, a vehicle was attempting to pass a contractor snowplow, when the vehicle struck the plow. The driver was uninjured during the crash. A passenger, an elderly woman from Portsmouth, was trapped inside the vehicle. Portsmouth rescue personnel extricated the woman from the vehicle after lifting the dashboard. The woman was transported by Middletown Rescue to Newport Hospital. Her medical condition is unknown this morning. The crash remains under…

Monday The Portsmouth Fire Department asks all residents to help clear snow from fire hydrants today. The Portsmouth EMA says, as of Monday morning, 297 Portsmouth residents remain without power. "Power should be restored to Riverside and nearby streets in Island Park by 2 p.m. today. Every customer in Portsmouth should have their power restored no later than 11 p.m. this evening," according to the EMA. Debris removal plans are underway to address the large volume of fallen trees and branches on the ground. Any debris that is creating an immediate hazard should be reported to the Public Works department at 683-0362 or the Portsmouth Fire department at 683-1200. The map above, provided by the National Weather Service, shows snowfall in the past 24 hours. It is updated every 6 hours. This is not a map showing overall snow depth: It only tracks the amount of snow that has fallen in the past day. The map is centered around the red marker, which is in the middle of Portsmouth Patch's coverage area.
White-out conditions are expected. Motorists are advised to stay off the roads before 1 p.m.
Snowfall and strong winds are expected to continue today until 1 p.m., the National Weather Service predicts. Snow accumulation is estimated at around two feet for Rhode Island, including Aquidneck Island, with another 4 to 8 inches of snow expected to fall before this afternoon. Snow, mainly before 1 p.m., could be heavy at times. The NWS reports that blizzard conditions will make for dangerous travel with visibilities near zero in white-out conditions. The NWS has also issued a coastal flood advisory for the area that is in effect until 8 a.m. today.
