RIPTA To Create New Bus Stop for Elderly Riders

RIPTA will begin a new service after hearing requests from senior citizens in Portsmouth.

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has decided to create a new bus stop after hearing requests from elderly riders.  Earlier this year, Rep. Daniel P. Reilly (R-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport) and Senator Christopher Ottiano (R-Dist. 11 Portsmouth,Bristol) spoke with residents at Anthony House, who told the legislators they wanted RIPTA to offer service in front of the apartment complex.  A bus stop is located across the street from the apartment complex, causing some to express safety concerns.  Rep. Reilly and Sen. Ottiano took these comments to RIPTA, who met with Anthony House residents and agreed to start a new service. Legislators Look at Moving Anthony House Bus Stop for Senior Residents

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has been asked to move this bus stop so residents no longer have to cross a busy street.

Several local legislators are looking at moving a bus stop for the elderly residents of Anthony House Apartments.  The current stop is located across the street from Anthony House Apartments. Local legislators would like to move this stop to the same side of the street as the assisted-living facility.  Rep. Daniel P. Reilly (R-Dist. 72 Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport) and Senator Christopher Ottiano (R-Dist. 11 Portsmouth, Bristol) have asked the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) to relocate the bus-stop.  An agreement has not been made to date, but RIPTA officials are examining this proposal.  “The relocation of the bus stop is a small project for RIPTA, but a very big deal to those who rely on public transportation who will …

Anthony House Apartments, Residences for Senior Citizens, Evacuated After Fire [VIDEO]

Portsmouth firefighters extinguished a small fire at the senior housing complex Friday morning.

An area of Anthony House Apartments, a senior-housing complex on Middle Road, was evacuated Friday morning after a heavy fire broke out in the rear of the complex.  More than 150 residents were asked to leave their homes and walk to the community room at the opposite side of the housing complex, which is currently undergoing major renovations. The fire broke out in one of the vacant apartments currently under construction.  "There was smoke in the building," said resident Phil Young, who left immediately to get his toy poodle, "Shadow," who does not reside at the complex. "You have to leave," he said. "It's the safe thing to do."  The blaze, reported at 9:22 a.m., is believed to have started in the kitchen area of the second-floor, vacant …

Anthony House Construction to Start in 1-2 Weeks

Anthony House owners, the Church Community Housing Corp., recently transferred its title to "allow for more improvements."

Residents of the senior housing development Anthony House will start to see a lot more activity and hear more noise in the next one to two weeks as major renovations begin to take shape.  Stephen Ostiguy, executive director for the Church Community Housing Corp., a non-profit which operates Anthony House, said major renovations are expected to begin within the next one to two weeks.  "Contractors and engineers are just finishing up now. Within the next one to two weeks, you'll start to see more activity."  Anthony House, a former school and now 70 one-and two-bedroom homes, is undergoing a major, $6.3 million renovation to rehabilitate the aging property.
