It seems like we’ve gone from one freezing storm to another this winter in Portsmouth. Here are some tips for using seasonal eating to ward off some of that icy chill.

This winter the weather in Rhode Island has been unusually cold, alternating between biting dryness and soaking storms. The days are also shorter in this cold season, and we’re generally less active, burning fewer calories. We often notice a natural tendency to want to sleep more or be less active. It is a time for slowing down a bit and conserving energy to handle the cold. Because of the dryness of the cold air outdoors and the heat indoors, our bodies can become very dry. In response to this dryness, we tend to produce more mucus to keep the body’s moist tissues and delicate membranes lubricated. Dangerously Cold Temperatures to Chill Portsmouth This Weekend

A joint shelter will be opened for all three Aquidneck Island communities if needed. Residents are urged to call 211 if they need shelter.

The Rhode Island Department of Emergency Management is warning residents of dangerous cold temperatures expected to chill the state this weekend and Monday.  The town of Portsmouth does not plan on opening a shelter at this time.  However, the Portsmouth Fire Department has been in touch with the American Red Cross. A joint shelter for all three Aquidneck Island communities may be opened if needed. Residents are urged to take the following steps this weekend and Monday: One of the primary concerns is the winter weather's ability to knock out heat, power and communications services to your home or office, sometimes for days at a time. With a few easy steps you can make certain your house will be warm, secure, and well-maintained from the outside-in this winter.
