Middletown’s Esquire Barber Shop plays a leading role cutting the hair of Ed Norton, Bill Murray and others.
Now that Wes Anderson’s filming of “Moonrise Kingdom” is wrapping up, local barber Shelly Bowen Shough of Esquire Barber Shop can now reveal the supporting role she played during the filming of the 1960s period film. Shough recreated those crisp, precision cuts and razor straight parts and tight waves held down by Brylcreem that have defined the look of men’s and boys’ haircuts from the 1960s. ("A little dab will do ya!") Her clientele in recent months has included Anderson’s lead actors, Bill Murray and Ed Norton, along with several of the child actors who played Boy Scouts. Murray came in once, while Norton visited four times. “I was bursting to tell,” Shough said at her Rockwood Road barbershop, located just off West Main Road near the …

Portsmouth's Alden Jenkins, 14, had quite the usual Boy Scout task finish on Monday at Yawgoog Camp in Hopkinton. Jenkins, a member of Troop 1, Portsmouth, was selected to serve as an extra on the movie "Moonrise Kingdom," which is being filmed at various locations throughout the state, including Portsmouth. "It (acting) seems fun," Jenkins said about the experience. "I liked seeing all the famous people, and how they put it all together. I never appreciated before the work it takes (for a movie)." Moonrise Kingdom, the latest from acclaimed writer and director Wes Anderson (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rushmore), is a story about two lovers who are pursued after fleeing their small New England town. The "Moon Rise" movie filming was over Prudence Island Friday as cast and crew of Director Wes Anderson's new flick landed on the island.
Acclaimed writer and director Wes Anderson and crew descended on Prudence Island this past Friday to film scenes for the upcoming "Moon Rise Kingdom," a story that revolves around a pair of lovers who flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out and find them. The film stars Hollywood big shots Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Frances McDormand, among others, and is set to film all over Aquidneck Island and South County for the next two months. Prudence Islanders, not know for their love of attention for the most part, do not seem to be outwardly bothered by the presence of Hollywood. This, according to Bob Balaban, an Academy Award nominated actor for his role in Gosford Park, might have much to do…
