Local businesses salute our service men and women with special deals year-round as well as on Veterans Day. Also, the Newport Chamber of Commerce's RI Salutes Web site lists numerous military discounts.

A number of local businesses are saluting veterans, military service men and women, and their families this Veterans Day by offering local discounts, specials and promotions. Veterans Day, a federal holiday which honors our nation's servicemen and women, fell on Sunday this year. However, many government agencies observe today as the holiday.  Many schools, government buildings and offices are closed today.  Here's a look at what's open and closed today, Monday, Nov. 12, in Portsmouth:  U.S. Post Office — The post office will be closed all day today. Share Your Photos of Portsmouth's Veterans Day Ceremony

Portsmouth residents honored its veterans during a ceremony on Sunday at Portsmouth Town Hall.  The Veterans Day ceremony featured speakers and performers from Portsmouth High School, Portsmouth Historical Society and Bugles Across America.  The theme this year was "Patriotic Music."  This event was co-sponsored by American Legion Post 18, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 18, VFW Post 5390 and their Ladies and Men's Auxiliary. Cub Scout Pack 50 provided the Color Guard. Did you attend the ceremony? Portsmouth To Honor Veterans This Sunday

Portsmouth will honor its veterans with music this year.

Residents are invited to attend a Veterans Day ceremony this Sunday at Portsmouth Town Hall.  The event, starting at 1:15 p.m., will feature speakers and performers from Portsmouth High School, Portsmouth Historical Society and Bugles Across America.  The theme this year is "Patriotic Music."  This event is co-sponsored by American Legion Post 18, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 18, VFW Post 5390 and their Ladies and Men's Auxiliary. Cub Scout Pack 50 will provide the Color Guard.

This week, the town of Portsmouth honored its bravest at home and overseas. On Thursday, Veterans Day, the town took time to give thanks to its soldiers, while earlier this week, the Town Council commended four Portsmouth police officers for their work in a breaking and entering case. Here's a look back at those honored during the week of Nov. 8 to 14: Monday On Monday, we learned what was with all the digging going on at Island Park.  "The old landfill that was located there is now being properly closed," said Town Administrator Robert Driscoll Monday morning. Back in 1972, the site at the intersection of Park and Mason Avenue was then the location of the town's landfill before it was closed between 1972 and '73. The DEM ordered the …

Gratitude Extends to Those Serving, As Well as Families

Thank you to those who defend our nation and to the spouses, children, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers who support them year-round.

Two powerful facts struck me from watching the evening news the other night: At least 23 Rhode Island soldiers have been killed in military service since 9/11; Though Rhode Island is the smallest state in the Union, with a population of just over one million, Rhode Island has the second highest per capita deployment rate in the country, according to the 11 p.m. news segment on WPRI Channel 12 Sunday night. The RI Army National Guard alone has deployed more than 2,000 soldiers over 9 years, the report went on. With the recent local deaths of Sgt. Portsmouth Honors Living and Fallen Heroes

The town of Portsmouth held a Veterans Day ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 11, at Town Hall, to honor those who have served in the armed forces.

The town of Portsmouth honored both living and fallen soldiers at a Veterans Day ceremony held Thursday, Nov. 11, at Town Hall. The ceremony began with a prayer and moment of silence for all soldiers with a special remembrance held for Sgt. Michael F. Paranzino, who died on Nov. 5 while serving in Afghanistan.  Speakers at the ceremony were Christine Leah Hayward, past commander of American Legion Post 18; newly-elected Rep. Dan Gordon, Dist. 71 (Portsmouth, Tiverton and Little Compton); and Cynthia "Cyndie" D. Kindell, who spoke about the Canines for Combat Veterans program.
