VIDEO: Local Residents React to Valentine's Day Surprises

Carlone's Florist will make more than 250 deliveries this Valentine's Day.

From giant smiles to gleeful shouts of surprise, several local women reacted happily Tuesday as their Valentine's Day gift arrived at their place of employment.   Carlone's Florist planned to make more than 250 deliveries in Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport this Valentine's Day, a sharp increase from last year. Carlone's manager Brian Weeks said he believed the increase was due to an improving economy and the use of social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, to promote their small business.  "It's a crazy day, but a good kind of crazy," Weeks said. "We have 15 to 20 employees around and all working for the one goal - to make sure everyone gets a good, quality arrangement."  Carlone's Florist also teamed up with Custom House Coffee this …

Is it 15 Point Road or Scampi's along the water? Or perhaps it's the Valley Inn on West Main Road or Fieldstones Grille with its rustic charm? Vote in our poll below, then share your thoughts in the comments section. If we left your favorite restaurant off the list, note that in the comments as well. Your Cheating Heart…Could Get Caught Next Week

A local private investigator says that there is a higher chance that an infidelity surveillance assignment will be successful on Feb. 13, 14, or 15 than at any other time of the year.

“It’s just human nature,” says private investigator Ryan P. McCormack, one-half of the Newport-based two-man team at Coastal Investigation Group, in explaining why there is a greater chance of catching an unfaithful person on surveillance during the three-day period from Feb. 13-15 than at any other time of the year. “Around Valentine’s Day, people naturally want to spend time with someone they are romantically involved with. They let their guard down a little, or maybe one person in the relationship pressures the other one, because it’s Valentine’s Day,” says McCormack, who notes that it’s a well-known phenomenon in the private investigation industry. “I’d estimate there is a 75% chance of catching someone during those three days, whereas…

What Is The Worst Valentine's Gift You've Received?

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, we want to know - what's the worst gift you ever got from your significant other?

Every Valentine's Day, men (and women alike) worry, obsess and cringe when it comes to shopping for the perfect gift for their loved one - and for good reason.  I've heard many gifts go horribly wrong. One friend thought it wise to give his girlfriend a gift certificate to a gym one year. Another thought it was wise to buy his wife a vacuum cleaner, and recommend she test it out right away.  One Christmas, my now-ex thought it wise to buy me jumper cables for my car. Needless to say, it wasn't meant to be.  We want to know what's the worst gift you've ever received for Valentine's Day. Tell us your story in the comment section below.

After opening six little tin boxes, I was expecting something romantic and life changing and it was....a garlic press. The logic was, "I know you love to cook", that sums it up, you can guess what happened. Needless to say, I'm happily married to someone other than garlic press man.   more ›

Where to Find Portsmouth-Made Valentine's Gifts Online

Don't know what to get your sweetheart this year? How about a handmade gift by a local artist?

Valentine’s Day gets a bad rap for being a Hallmark-created holiday or a day to grab a lame Whitman Sampler from CVS, but for many it’s the perfect time to show off their creativity in honor of a loved one. Many Portsmouth artists also create unique gifts this time of year. Many of these artistic items are available to purchase on Web sites such as Etsy.com.  Featured in the photo gallery above and listed below are a few Valentine's Day gift ideas found this year on Etsy. All of these items were made by area residents!  Peacock-feathered headband — Elizabeth Winter Handmade facial and body soap — Elizabeth Winter Brownie pops — The Atomic Apple Co.
