From giant smiles to gleeful shouts of surprise, several local women reacted happily Tuesday as their Valentine's Day gift arrived at their place of employment. Carlone's Florist planned to make more than 250 deliveries in Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport this Valentine's Day, a sharp increase from last year. Carlone's manager Brian Weeks said he believed the increase was due to an improving economy and the use of social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, to promote their small business. "It's a crazy day, but a good kind of crazy," Weeks said. "We have 15 to 20 employees around and all working for the one goal - to make sure everyone gets a good, quality arrangement." Every Valentine's Day, men (and women alike) worry, obsess and cringe when it comes to shopping for the perfect gift for their loved one - and for good reason. I've heard many gifts go horribly wrong. One friend thought it wise to give his girlfriend a gift certificate to a gym one year. Another thought it was wise to buy his wife a vacuum cleaner, and recommend she test it out right away. One Christmas, my now-ex thought it wise to buy me jumper cables for my car.
