Bobby Hurley Named Buffalo Head Coach

Bobby Hurley served as the associate head coach for his brother Danny at URI, and will now take over at Buffalo University.

Bobby Hurley, one of the most iconic figures in college basketball history, has been named the 12th men's basketball head coach at the University at Buffalo. He joins UB from the University of Rhode Island where he has been serving as associate head coach.  UB Director of Athletics Danny White made the announcement on Tuesday at a 5:00 pm press conference at Alumni Arena.  "After reviewing a large and highly qualified national pool and following my conversations with some of the most respected figures in college athletics, Coach Hurley was clearly the choice to lead the next era of UB basketball," White said. "As we continue to foster our role as the flagship athletic department for the state of New York, the appointment of Coach Hurley …

Song Remains The Same – Rams Fade in Second Half

The Rams’ first half efficiency gets wore down by a more talented UMass squad, as URI loses 75-66 in its season finale.

KINGSTON – For seemingly the 100th time this year, the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team saw a close game slip away in the second half, as the Rams couldn’t keep pace with a more talented opponent. For Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, the cast of characters changed, as the University of Massachusetts Minutemen played the role of past squads like La Salle, St. Bonaventure and VCU. However, the ending was the same, as the Rams lost 75-66. As usual, the Rams were within striking distance at the half, trailing by just a single point with about four seconds left. In a play that epitomized URI’s season, UMass point guard Chaz Williams got the ball in the backcourt, shook off light contact from 60 feet away, and then launched a …

[CHAT] URI Closes Out Season vs. UMass

The Rams look to end the season on a positive note with a win against the University of Massachusetts.

The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team looks to recover from a brutal loss to St. Joseph’s with a season-ending win against the University of Massachusetts today. Tip-off at the Ryan Center is at 2 p.m., and as usual, we will be providing a live chat for the game. The Rams (8-20, 3-12 Atlantic 10) last played on Wednesday, when they were crushed 81-44 at St. Joseph’s (17-11, 8-7 Atlantic 10). The lone bright spot was that the game was only 40 minutes long. URI looks to bounce back in their season and home finale, against UMass (18-10, 8-7 Atlantic 10). The Rams have already been eliminated from postseason play, as their record doesn’t qualify them for Atlantic 10, NIT or NCAA tournament play. There are two special things …

[CHAT] Rams Look To Play Spoiler vs. La Salle

With a win against La Salle today, URI can hurt the Explorers’ conference tournament seeding and postseason chances.

The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team will look for its ninth win of the season, and fourth conference win, as it hosts the La Salle Explorers at 2 p.m. at the Ryan Center. The usual script for the two teams has flipped a bit this year, as the Rams are rebuilding while La Salle (18-7, 8-4 Atlantic 10) is in contention for postseason play. The Rams (8-17, 3-9 Atlantic 10) are hoping to play spoiler as a result. To win, URI will have to shake off one of its worst shooting performances ever. The Rams lost 55-42 to Xavier on Wednesday night, shooting 24.1 percent from the field in the process. Shooting below 30 percent will almost surely result in another loss. Following today’s game, URI has just three games left, with the …

[VIDEO] Rhody Misses Broad Sides of Barn, Musketeers

URI misses 25 shots from the 3-point arc in a 55-42 loss to Xavier on Wednesday night.

KINGSTON – With a dismal 24.1 percent shooting performance from the field, the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team faded in the second half against Xavier, seeing a one-point halftime lead turn into a 55-42 loss on Wednesday night. Despite getting a slew of open looks from 3-point range, the Rams could only hit five of their 30 attempts from the arc. Although URI (8-17, 3-9 Atlantic 10) did get 10 assists on its 13 baskets and only turned the ball over eight times, Xavier took advantage of trips to the line to surge past the Rams in the second half. The Musketeers (15-10, 8-4 Atlantic 10) finished 17-for-24 from the line, and generally had their way in the paint for both halves. Six-foot-eight senior forward Travis Taylor …

[CHAT] Rams Host Xavier In 7th Annual Pink Out

The Rams will try to give the Musketeers a loss, while gaining funds for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation.

The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team will attempt to win a third game in a row for the first time this year, as they host the Xavier Musketeers at 7 p.m. tonight in the seventh annual Pink Out game. For the game, fans are being encouraged to wear pink, and t-shirts are sold at the door for $10. Proceeds benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation. URI (8-16, 3-8 Atlantic 10) still has a chance at the Atlantic 10 tournament in Brooklyn. The Rams are a game behind No. 12 Dayton and No. 13 St. Bonaventure for the final spot in the tournament, as the top 12 teams qualify. URI has back-to-back wins, against Dayton and Duquesne, and this is only the second opportunity this year for a three-game streak for the Rams. While …

[VIDEO] Munford’s Shot Pushes Rams Past Dayton

Xavier Munford led all scorers with 18, included a 3-point shot with 3.3 left that gave the Rams a 75-72 win.

KINGSTON – It was a familiar refrain for the Dayton Flyers, as another Atlantic 10 game with the University of Rhode Island Rams ended with No. 5 hitting a game-winning shot. This time though, it was Xavier Munford – not URI alum Marquis Jones – that did the honors, as his 3 with 3.3 left gave the Rams a 75-72 lead they wouldn’t surrender. Munford led all scorers with 18 points, shaking off a 1-for-6 start in the first half to finish 6-for-14 from the field, and 3-for-5 from the line. However, URI senior Nikola Malesevic played the most complete game. Malesevic finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, three steals, two blocks and just two turnovers. While he only shot 5-for-16 from the field and 0-for-3 from the line, the …

[CHAT] URI Hosts Dayton Tonight

Both the Rams and Flyers are desperate for wins this year, and the two face-off at 7 p.m. at the Ryan Center in Kingston.

KINGSTON – Join us tonight starting at 7 p.m. from the Ryan Center, as the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team hosts the Dayton Flyers. Both the Rams (6-16, 1-8 Atlantic 10) and Dayton (13-10, 3-6 Atlantic 10) have struggled this year in conference play. [CHAT] URI vs. St. Bonaventure, The Blizzard Bowl

In what’s sure to be a sparsely attended game, the Rams host St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m.

KINGSTON – Join me on tonight’s live chat and keep me company, since it’s likely there won’t be many people actually at the Ryan Center as the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team (6-15, 1-7 Atlantic 10) hosts St. Bonaventure (10-11, 3-5 Atlantic 10). This game mirrors a contest between URI and Fairfield a few years ago, in which about 500 hardy fans made it into the Ryan Center to watch the game, thanks to 20 inches of snow outside. While plows have been out most of the day in Rhode Island, the roads are still a mess, and almost all of Washington County and Aquidneck Island are still without power. Both factors will surely depress attendance. But hey, if you’re inside and have power, or have a working smart phone, follow along…

[VIDEO] Late St. Bonaventure Run Tames Rams

A dagger 3-point shot from Eric Mosley with 22 seconds puts the Bonnies up by four and sinks the Rams.

KINGSTON – University of Rhode Island head coach Danny Hurley wasn’t shy when sharing his thoughts on this year’s team and the future following a 67-61 loss to St. Bonaventure. “This is never happening to me again,” he said of the team’s 6-16 mark, and 1-8 record in Atlantic 10 play. “This will never happen again, I know that.” What happened Saturday night was a Rams’ team that faded in the second half and down the stretch again. A six-point halftime lead turned into a six-point deficit at the end, thanks to a St. Bonaventure team that only turned the ball over twice. In contrast, URI got easy buckets in the first half on 10 St. Bonaventure turnovers and in transition. With those opportunities gone, the Rams struggled, shooting just 33.3 …
