Portsmouth's Past

Patch takes a trip back in time to view historical images of the town, which were collected by Portsmouth resident, historian and author Jim Garman.

A view of Portsmouth taken from in front of St. Paul's Church on the East Main Road looking north. This photograph was taken about a 100 years ago and, except for the fact that the road is now paved, the buildings are easily recognizable. The white band on the telephone pole marks a street trolley stop.

Trolley station for the Newport and Providence Street Railway Co. This was the Turnpike Station in the Newtown section of Portsmouth. Here the trolley turned out from Freeborn Street and headed north on Turnpike Avenue to its ultimate stop with a connection to the Bristol Ferry. The trolley stations were quite elaborately constructed as can be seen from this photograph. This line under several names was in operation from 1903 until it was replaced by bus lines in 1925.
