Council Votes 7-0 to Keep Transfer Station Sticker Fee at $125

The Town Council voted unanimously Monday night to maintain the current fee to use the transfer station, but move the projected deficit to the operating budget.

The Town Council voted unanimously Monday to keep the transfer sticker fee price at $125 this year after a nearly hour-long discussion proposing various changes, including raising the fee to $150 and eliminating the ferry service fee for trash service on Prudence Island. The town is faced with a projected $90,000 shortfall this year in operating revenue for the transfer station. Councilors proposed raising the fee to make up this shortfall. "The additional cost for maintenance and upkeep of the facility is not covered at all," wrote Councilor James Seveney in his proposal to the board. "The old, obsolete and increasingly difficult to maintain equipment needs to be replaced in the near term. The council must act quickly, with limited data …

The problem I have is why do I have to pay extra for town services? We get so little for the amount of taxes we pay most other towns like Tiverton has curbside pickup. We dont have to buy a sticker to use the fire dept. or to send our children to school. Why doesen't the school dept. charge extra for after school programs like sports and clubs? maybe we should eliminate taxes and the town can …   more ›

Survey Shows: Most Residents Oppose Pay-Per-Bag Program

The Portsmouth Economic Development Committee released the following results of its trash survey on Monday.

The Portsmouth Economic Development Committee (PEDC) has released the results of its trash survey. The results will be discussed at tonight's Town Council meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. Approximately 489 people completed this survey with 99 percent stating they were Portsmouth residents. The survey asked specific questions regarding the town's handling of trash. Seventy-five percent of respondents said they do not favor a pay-per-bag program. "While they are equally divided on whether the transfer station fees should or should …

Portsmouth Town Council Considers Pay-As-You-Go Trash Program

The Town Council met on Monday, Dec. 6, to discuss Transfer Station sticker fees, but ended up talking trash, literally.

The Town Council gathered Monday, Dec. 6, at Town Hall to discuss transfer station sticker fees, but led to discussing alternative trash programs, including a pay-as-you-go system, for more than two hours.  "We have a real problem of other people bringing other people's trash to the transfer station," said Councilor Judi Staven. "...We need to increase our recycling as much as possible. Not everyone is paying to use the transfer station...I think we are the only transfer station in the state that doesn't enforce its rules." According to Staven, the transfer station will have a $90,000 deficit this fiscal year. The transfer station costs more than $650,000 to operate annually with revenues being raised by sticker sales, taxes and …

Isn't that what the security guards are for?” Why do we have the “guard” checking stickers for entry to begin with? I know…if you don’t have a current sticker you’re turned away. I concur…if we don’t have someone there checking them that there will be unauthorized people …   more ›

The Town Council voted 4-2 Monday evening to postpone discussing the Transfer Station sticker fee until Jan. 10. In opposition were Councilors Michael Buddemeyer and Jim Seveney. "I don't think the council is prepared to make a decision tonight," Council President Joe Robicheau said.  The council made two prior votes pertaining to the sticker's price, which is currently set at $125. Councilor James Seveney motioned to keep the transfer station sticker price at $125, but add a fee of $35 to each sticker sale for upkeep and maintenance of the transfer station.
