An early morning fire on May 26 leveled the polo pavilion at Glen Farm.
More than a week after a fire leveled the Newport International Polo pavilion on May 26, officials say they're still not sure what caused the blaze. "It is still under investigation," Michael Sweeney, chief of investigations for the State Office of the Fire Marshal, said on Monday morning. Sweeney would not comment further on the ongoing investigation. The fire, which destroyed the wooden polo pavilion, was first reported to the fire department around 5:34 a.m. on May 26. The fire is now under criminal investigation by Portsmouth police. No arrests have been made.
The fire found engulfing a boat along the Sakonnet River early Sunday morning was intentionally set, said investigator David Scott of the State Fire Marshal's Office Wednesday. "Basically, it is an incendiary fire, meaning it was a set fire," Scott said. "It is under criminal investigation." Scott would not comment further on what incendiary tool was used to set the blaze.
