Freaky the Scary Snowman decides to scare St. Patrick's Day partiers in Newport.
Freaky the Scary Snowman decided to scare a few green-clad fans this past Saturday at the annual St. Patrick's Day parade in Newport. Freaky, as he is known on YouTube, scared paradegoers on Lower Thames. You can see some of the frights in the video above. The following information was provided by the Newport Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.
According to Newport police, 94 people were either arrested or cited this past St. Patrick's Day weekend. Last year, more than 70 people had run-ins with the police. In 2011, 95 people were either cited or arrested on parade day. Most of the arrests were for alcohol-related charges. As of 9 a.m. Monday morning, police reports were still being processed and some are still not complete. Patch will update these figures as information becomes available. This is our friendly reminder that it is illegal to drink in public. Yes, even on St. Patrick's Day.
In 2012, police kept busy on St. Patrick's Day when 72 people were either arrested or cited. The year before that, there were 95 arrests on parade day. A majority of the list involved alcohol-related citations, which was made up of both locals and out-of-towners. While Newport police said last year was potentially a perfect storm for parade day partiers, since the Saturday parade coincided with St. Patrick's Day and beautiful weather, this year may not be as ideal. According to the National Weather Service, there is a slight chance of snow showers between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a slight chance of rain after 2 p.m. Temperature are expected to reach a chilly 39 degrees. With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, residents Irish for life and Irish for a day are looking to get their fill on traditional Irish fare. On top of the list is corned beef, a salt-cured meat, popular with cabbage or in soup. Clements' Market and The Green Grocer are currently selling corned beef. There are several parking bans and restrictions for Saturday, March 16.
Traffic flow and parking in Newport will be affected by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday March 16. Traffic will be congested in the downtown area from about 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking will be limited. The parade participants will be begin staging on lower Broadway at about 9 a.m. so it is recommended that people coming to Newport to view the parade avoid Broadway.
