Police and fire respond to several car crashes as the snow began to fall Wednesday afternoon.
Traffic was snarled to a crawl Wednesday on West Main Road as the snow began to fall earlier than predicted. Traffic waited as tow trucks removed vehicles from the scene of a four-car crash that occurred near the Bay View Apartments at 12:52 p.m. No injuries were reported. A crash involving a state Department of Transportation (DOT) plow and an SUV also occurred in Portsmouth Wednesday afternoon. "There was an incident that occurred with one of our plows," said DOT spokesperson Charles St. Martin. The crash occurred between noon and 1 p.m. on Route 24 at Boyd's Lane. The operator of the plow was transported by ambulance to Newport Hospital for treatment of injuries. His medical condition and identity are unknown at this time. Police and …

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning, which will be in effect from 4 p.m. today until 10 a.m. Thursday. Total snow accumulations are expected to range between two to four inches in spots by 4 p.m. A few program cancellations were announced as of 4 p.m. Wednesday. One of the most dreaded things on my daily “to-do” list is to decide what to make for dinner. However, lately the weather is helping make this task a little easier. It seems as though we’ve had a big snowstorm once a week since Dec. 26. On these snowy days and frigid nights, comfort foods rule in my house. The trick is to try to make them as healthy as possible. It’s so easy, for me anyway, to eat a big bowl of soup (healthy) with half a loaf of bread and butter (not so healthy). I know healthy comfort food sounds like an oxymoron, but with a little planning, it can be done. Total snow accumulations are expected to range between one to three inches in spots across the area. More snow is expected Wednesday as forecasters continue to watch a predicted coastal storm move into the area. A few program cancellations were announced as of 2 p.m. Tuesday. With Portsmouth schools closed on Friday, there was only one thing for children to do—go sledding! Dozens of Portsmouth kids took to the hills at King's Grant Fellowship Church on Friday afternoon with tubes, sleds and snowboards in hand. Portsmouth residents are asked to be careful driving today as snow turns to freezing rain, sleet.
A winter weather advisory will remain in effect until noon today, announced the National Weather Service (NWS) at 8:20 a.m. Friday. A high impact but short duration snowstorm will bring sleet and freezing rain to southern Rhode Island. A winter storm warning has been cancelled, according to the NWS. The snow will mix with or change to sleet and freezing rain until late morning and end this afternoon. Accumulations are expected to reach three to five inches of snow. The sleet and rain will make for very slippery travel especially on untreated road surfaces. “Any snow or ice would make driving and walking difficult...but not impossible...on untreated roadways and sidewalks.
