Portsmouth residents are asked to be careful driving today as snow turns to freezing rain, sleet.
A winter weather advisory will remain in effect until noon today, announced the National Weather Service (NWS) at 8:20 a.m. Friday. A high impact but short duration snowstorm will bring sleet and freezing rain to southern Rhode Island. A winter storm warning has been cancelled, according to the NWS. The snow will mix with or change to sleet and freezing rain until late morning and end this afternoon. Accumulations are expected to reach three to five inches of snow. The sleet and rain will make for very slippery travel especially on untreated road surfaces. “Any snow or ice would make driving and walking difficult...but not impossible...on untreated roadways and sidewalks. When temperatures are below freezing...motorists need to be …
Postal carriers urge customers to clear the way to their mailboxes to ensure timely and efficient mail delivery during the snowy winter months.
For at least four months out of every year, U.S. postal carriers are faced with hazardous and frustrating situations while delivering mail to their customers. Christine Dugas, spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), Southeast New England District, asserts, "carriers have had to deal with broken elbows, ruptured knees and concussions" due icy conditions surrounding mailboxes. Postal carriers are told "not to deliver the mail" if they deem it unsafe, as "safety is of paramount importance," Dugas said. "People just tend to forget. It is not only about USPS carriers, but anyone who visits your properly, including utility workers. It is ultimately the homeowners' responsibility to make their property safe, and in the event of personal …

Portsmouth DPW asks motorists to stay off roads this afternoon as plows and sanders continue to treat surface areas.
While a winter storm warning and travel advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. tonight for Newport County, Portsmouth has already reportedly seen more than a foot of snow fall. "It's been a really difficult storm to keep up with," said David Kehew, director of Portsmouth's Department of Public Works. Kehew said the difficulty with this storm came from "the amount of snow." "I'd say we have about 14 inches of snow on the ground," Kehew said. "That's a guess. They (state Emergency Management Agency) say we could see another two, three or four inches of additional accumulation." The snowfall was expected to conclude around 2 p.m. this afternoon. However, drifting snow and heavy winds could continue throughout the evening. "They (EMA) gave …

Christina Lantz explains why she loves winter weather.
As I look out my window this morning, I am happy to see a fluffy blanket of fresh white snow. I love snow. My friend of many years, Liz Mozier, recently said it best, “Many, many years after finishing school, I still get pings of anxiety that all this glorious snow is just going to turn to wet, sloppy rain.” I couldn’t have said it any better. Some favorite memories as a child are those spent watching the weather and praying to hear school was cancelled and always wishing my family could winter in Foster-Glocester. My husband and I are both major snow lovers despite the fact we don’t ski, snowboard or engage in any activity otherwise enjoyed in snowy conditions. As a snowstorm approaches, my husband and I watch the weather reports …
