Where's Santa? Track Him Live from Portsmouth!

The North American Aerospace Defense Command has a website that now offers a Santa tracker mobile app to follow the jolly man's magical flight.

Portsmouth children have sent him their wish lists, sat on his lap, and left cookies and milk for his arrival. Now the only thing left for children to do is track Santa's progress as he delivers gifts around the world on Christmas Eve. Thanks to the folks behind the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) website, families worldwide can now follow Santa's Christmas journey in real time. The tradition started in 1955 after an advertisement for Sears Roebuck & Co. misprinted a telephone number for a special "Santa hotline." Instead of reaching Kris Kringle, the number put kids through to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Commander-in-Chief’s operations, according to a description on the NORAD Tracks Santa Facebook page, …

Santa Sightings: Share Your Pictures!

Have you spotted Santa around Portsmouth? Share your pictures!

Santa, Mrs. Claus and the team of elves have spent the year preparing for this time of year when the reindeer pull Santa from the North Pole to visit the children of Aquidneck Island.  Have you seen Santa or his helpers?  Upload to this gallery or tell us about the spotting in the comments. Mrs. Claus requests that you keep the cookies to a minimum, as there was a report that Santa got stuck in a Middletown chimney last year. The elf who reported the incident to Mrs. Claus would like to remain anonymous. To see Santa’s schedule, click here.

Families Rejoice, Meet Santa at Saved Christmas Tree Lighting

The Portsmouth Free Public Library held its nearly canceled Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony this past Sunday.

After coming extremely close to cancelling a 28-year-old tradition, the Portsmouth Free Public Library rejoiced this past Sunday at the revival of its annual tree lighting ceremony.  Mike Mello, president of the Portsmouth Library's Board of Trustees, started the tradition 28 years ago, when he and his family attended the Christmas tree lighting in Tiverton and thought it was a fun, community event. The following year, the board of trustees decided to have its own tree lighting.  The annual event was cancelled in November due to a lack of volunteers, according to the library’s Director Carolyn Magnus. “Because the tree is so tall now the lights couldn’t be put on with regular ladders as it has been for years by the board’s president Mike …

Santa Claus Asks Council: Have You Been Naughty or Nice?

Santa Claus paid a special visit to Town Hall Monday evening during the Town Council meeting.

The Portsmouth Town Council was greeted by a special visitor Monday night. Santa Claus stopped by to hand out candy canes and ask council members if they've been "naughty or nice." Many in the audience laughed and smiled at this unexpected visit.  The council meeting resumed as a rendition of Alvin and The Chipmunks' "Hula Hoop Christmas Song" was heard from the parking lot and Santa's sleigh took off to visit the next house.

Creative 'Santa in Outhouse' Display Causes Neighborhood Debate

One Portsmouth Christmas display is causing a stir among neighbors who say the image is "offensive."

One Portsmouth Christmas display is causing more than just a "festive" feeling for residents on Dorothy Avenue.  Residents there are questioning the blown-up display of Santa Claus going to the bathroom in an outhouse.  The image is on the front lawn of 64 Dorothy Ave., a house nearly covered in Christmas decorations. Owner Scott Durant says he decided to buy the display because he thought it was "funny."  "I think it's funny," he wrote on Portsmouth Patch. "The kids all love it." Some neighbors say it's offensive. "Santa in the out house is just wrong," wrote a user by the name of East Side. Other neighbors think the display is quite creative. "I just drove by Dorothy Ave. I have to say I was impressed even with the Santa in the outhouse…
