Tiverton STOP is looking to shift the focus to the growing momentum behind East Bay's anti-toll movement at Friday morning's opening ceremony for the new Sakonnet River Bridge. The state Department of Transportation's RSVP-only opening ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. on the bridge deck of the old Sakonnet River Bridge this Friday. Both DOT Director Michael P. Lewis and Gov. Lincoln Chafee will attend. "We would like to ask all our members, if they are available, to please attend the ceremony," said Joy Gilkeson, one of Tiverton STOP's organizaers, in an email on Tuesday. "A small "NO TOLLS" poster or sign would also be great. We'd like to ask that all posters be respectful and that everyone refrain from name calling, etc." Tiverton STOP…

The following is a letter to the editor. The Governor’s recent visit to Portsmouth to discuss how the state can help businesses grow was unsurprisingly concerned mostly with the Governor’s plan to place tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge. Unfortunately for those in attendance, I feel that the visit left us with more questions than answers. The Governor and his Director of Transportation, Michael Lewis, explained some of the reasoning behind the Governor’s decision to put tolls on the bridge, authorized by this current year’s budget. However, I am still confused as to why a statewide transportation financing problem must be solved by placing such a heavy burden on local area residents and businesses. Director Lewis stated that, without …

Gov. Lincoln Chafee visited Portsmouth Town Hall on Thursday to discuss "fiscal responsibility." He was met by a dozen bridge toll protesters outside, while more than 100 residents and politicians waited inside Town Hall. Featured here is a report of the meeting. 8:45 a.m. — Gov. Lincoln Chafee arrives. Audience member yells, "Don't shake his hand. He's selling us out." Town Council President Joe Robicheau gives introductions. Chafee gives opening remarks. The governor says, "for the first time in 20 years," voters will not see a transportation bond on the election ballot. 8:49 — Tiverton business owner asking questions to Chafee at the moment. "Why do Aquidneck Island residents have to pay," owner asks. Michael Lewis, director of the …

Portsmouth residents and businesses protest a plan for bridge tolls on the new Sakonnet River Bridge.
It was difficult to go anywhere in Portsmouth Monday without seeing or hearing complaints against plans to place toll booths on the new Sakonnet River Bridge. Several residents were seen first-hand signing a paper petition protesting the decision by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority to collect tolls on the new infrastructure. The decision came after the state turned over ownership of the bridge to the Turnpike and Bridge Authority. It is unknown how many signatures have been added to the petition, but the totals are adding up quick. The petition can be found at many locations throughout Portsmouth, including Town Hall, Clements' Marketplace, Reidy's Family Restaurant and Custom House Coffee. A Facebook group, Voters against …
