U.S. Senator Jack Reed Announces $150K Grant to Help RI Dairy Farmers

U.S. Senator Jack Reed joined local farmers Monday at Escobar’s Highland Farm in Portsmouth to announce a major new federal grant for the Rhode Island Dairy Farms Cooperative.

Rhody Fresh now does.  Thanks to a $150,000 federal grant, Rhody Fresh Milk will offer a new Rhody Fresh cheese made from locally-produced milk.  Last fall, Rhody Fresh Milk began offering an artisan cheese at local farmers markets. Thanks to this grant, the group of eight Rhode Island dairy farms will now increase production and supply its locally-made cheese in markets throughout the state.  U.S. Senator Jack Reed announced the federal grant at a special visit to Escobar's Farm in Portsmouth on Monday. Portsmouth Farmer To Help Unveil New Rhody Fresh Product

A well-known Portsmouth resident will speak at the unveiling of a new, hand-crafted artisan cheese made right here in Rhode Island.

The following is from a press release.  The Department of Environmental Management’s Division of Agriculture will join representatives from Rhody Fresh Milk and Narragansett Creamery in Providence to unveil a new variety of artisan cheese – Rhody Fresh’s newest product – on Tuesday, Nov. 13.  Butterkase, a hand-crafted artisan German-style soft cheese is made in Providence at Providence Specialty Products, using milk from Rhody Fresh dairy farms.   Participants in Tuesday’s event will include DEM Director Janet Coit; Ann Gooding, communications director for the Providence Department of Planning and Development; Louis Escobar of Escobar Highland Farm in Portsmouth and winner of the 2012 Green Pastures Award, who will speak on behalf of …
