The town of Portsmouth has posted an advertisement seeking civilian dispatchers for the Portsmouth Fire Department. The ad was posted on the Sakonnet Times Web site Wednesday. The advertisement says applicants must be 21 years old and possess either a high school diploma or GED. Applicants must also demonstrate technical and computer skills, meet departmental medical standards and pass a written test. Previous applicants should call (401) 683-9118. Applications are also available in the Finance Department at Town Hall during the week from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Portsmouth Town Council once again tabled a discussion about "civilian dispatchers."
The Portsmouth Town Council once again tabled a proposal to replace firefighters with "civilian dispatchers" until speaking with the union despite the union president's prior approval of the plan. The vote was unanimous Monday night. Keith Hamilton motioned to table the item to "talk with the union president." Other councilors questioned the cost savings to the town. "It's just not moving the needle on the town's finances," Jim Seveney said. At a prior meeting, former Town Administrator Robert Driscoll presented an early version of the proposal before the Portsmouth Town Council.
