The Portsmouth School District will honor the victims of Newtown, CT, the first full school week of January.
Portsmouth schools will fly green flags the first, full school week in January to honor victms of the Newtown, CT, shooting, announced Superintendent of Schools Lynn Krizic. Krizic announced the plan during the Portsmouth School Committee meeting on Tuesday night. According to Krizic, green ribbons represent support for both the victims and survivors of the Newtown community. The ribbons were provided to the school committee by parent Christina Craft, a former Newtown, CT, resident. School administrators in Portsmouth met Monday to review all existing safety procedures and practices in place "as a way of being responsive and sensitive to the incident that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School," according to Superintendent Lynn Krizic. The Newport School District is also reviewing its safety plans after what is being considered one of the worst school shootings in recent U.S. history. The appointment was made at Tuesday night's meeting.
The Portsmouth School Committee appointed a new interim finance director for the school district at its Tuesday night meeting. According to the meeting highlights, Joseph Crowley has been appointed as Interim Director of Finance and Administration. No other information about Crowley was provided in the release. Crowley will temporarily fill the office left vacant after the resignation of Mark Dunham, who stepped down in July. To view more highlights from the meeting, click here.

The Portsmouth School District posted the following on their Web site Friday.
The Portsmouth School Committee ratified a new contract with one of its main unions on Tuesday night. The school committee approved a new contract with Council 94, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which cuts pension benefits in 2013. On Friday, the Portsmouth School District posted this statement (which is also attached at right) about the union deal. According to the release, in regards to pensions, the multiplier as of July 1, 2013 would be reduced down to 1 percent from the current 2.5 percent, and would be based upon the final highest three (3) consecutive years of salary. Portsmouth Schools have highest science performance in five years.
The following is a press release from the Portsmouth School District. In the spring, students in grades 4, 8 and 11 participated in New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) Science tests. These tests are designed to measure student performance on the standards developed and adopted by the states of Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Results of the recently released spring 2012 Science NECAP test scores saw students performing at or above proficiency in grades 4, 8 and 11 at their highest levels in the last five years. The most significant improvement in science achievement was seen at the 4th grade where the percentage of students at or above proficiency went from 58% to 71.1% in one year. AccuWeather.com long-range meteorologists are projecting a weak to moderate El Niño by late summer, which could mean more snow this winter.
It's not even winter yet - in fact fall doesn't begin until Sept. 22 - but Accuweather.com reports that unlike last winter, students (and teachers) can expect more snow days this winter. Despite a rare snowstorm last October, the winter of 2011-2012 was mild and relatively snowless. There were no snow days in Portsmouth last year, but that could change for the 2012-2013 school year. The Portsmouth School Committee met Tuesday night.
Portsmouth High School is now one step closer to having a new turf field at the school. The Portsmouth School Committee voted Tuesday to allow an engineering study to be performed for the project. A group of individuals is advocating for the approval of a new turf field for the high school. Members of the group are Town Councilor Keith Hamilton, Christine Jenkins, Ed and Julia Coll, Aquidneck Land Trust executive director Ted Clement and Gary Eggeman. The estimated cost to install a turf field and replace the track is $1.6 million, with the majority of funds to be obtained through fundraising, according to the school department. The band members will receive their new uniforms next week.
After an extensive fundraising effort, the Portsmouth High School band members will receive their new uniforms next Tuesday, April 3, reports The Sakonnet Times. The uniforms will be shown off for the first time at a public concert to be held April 3 at 7 p.m. in the high school's new gym. The high school's Music Boosters, a volunteer group, purchased 150 new uniforms after an extensive fundraising effort. The current uniforms are more than 20-years-old, reports The Sakonnet Times.

Joshua Despres, the teen arrested after allegedly using racial slurs during a high school fight, says he was bullied for months and school administrators did nothing to prevent it.
The Little Compton teenager who was arrested Tuesday following a fight at Portsmouth High School is speaking out and telling his side of the story. Patch sat down with 18-year-old Joshua Despres and his mother at their Little Compton home Friday. Despres says he was the victim of bullying for months and that he feels school administrators did nothing to prevent it. The high school senior talks about the fight in the video at right. Police arrested Despres on a warrant Tuesday and charged him with disorderly conduct. The arrest stemmed from a fight that occurred Monday morning at the high school.
