New members of the Portsmouth Town Council and School Committee were sworn into office Monday night.
A new political era took the helm in Portsmouth on Monday night. All elected officials of the Portsmouth Town Council and School Committee were officially sworn into office at Town Hall. The newly elected officials are mostly Democrats, who won big on election night after defeating several Republican incumbents. Girl Scouts began the evening ceremonies with the Pledge of Allegiance and "Star Spangled Banner." Outgoing members of the town council made closing remarks except Judi Staven, who was absent. A Republican member of the Portsmouth School Committee has stepped down, but says the election was not a factor.
Portsmouth School Committee member Jonathan H. Harris submitted his resignation on Wednesday morning, only a day after the General Election. However, Harris, vice chairman of the school board, says the election was not a factor in his decision. "The election outcome was not a factor at all," Harris wrote in an e-mail. "I had decided to resign three months ago once I reached the two-year mark of my service. Doing so after the election allows for an easy transition of another candidate to be appointed rather than be elected. The Portsmouth School Committee appointed a new interim finance director for the school district at its Tuesday night meeting. According to the meeting highlights, Joseph Crowley has been appointed as Interim Director of Finance and Administration. No other information about Crowley was provided in the release. The Portsmouth School District posted the following on their Web site Friday.
The Portsmouth School Committee ratified a new contract with one of its main unions on Tuesday night. The school committee approved a new contract with Council 94, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which cuts pension benefits in 2013. On Friday, the Portsmouth School District posted this statement (which is also attached at right) about the union deal. According to the release, in regards to pensions, the multiplier as of July 1, 2013 would be reduced down to 1 percent from the current 2.5 percent, and would be based upon the final highest three (3) consecutive years of salary. The Providence Journal reports the school committee approved a new contract with Council 94, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which cuts pension benefits in 2013. It is unclear how much pension benefits will be cut. The minutes for the meeting only state the school committee "Approved the substantive changes to the Council 94 contract."
