A Portsmouth woman died after a head-on vehicle crash on West Main Road near Raytheon. Her identity was previously withheld pending family notification.
Authorities have released the name of the woman who was pronounced dead after a head-on vehicle crash on May 13 on West Main Road. Ethel Chafton, 78, of Second Street, Portsmouth, died on May 13, 2013, after sustaining injuries in a head-on crash on West Main Road in Portsmouth. A 2001 Chevrolet Malibu was travelling south on West Main Road around 10 a.m. on May 13, when it crossed over the double-yellow lines near Locust Avenue and collided head-on with a 2008 Isuzu Box truck, police said. Portsmouth Rescue crews used hydraulic tools to remove the woman trapped in the vehicle. She was transported to Newport Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Jay Catalan, 50, 34 Hillside Road, Portsmouth, was arrested, and charged with driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a chemical test after his truck landed on its side at Cumberland Farms Monday. Portsmouth police and fire officials responded around 4:10 p.m. to the Cumberland Farms near Sprague Street and East Main Road for a report of a "rollover." Police say Catalan was operating the vehicle southbound on East Main Road when he attempted to make a turn onto Sprague Street. Catalan lost control of the vehicle, which landed on its side. Man allegedly jumps in front of police cruiser Three were arrested after a vehicle was stopped in Common Fence Point on May 12 at 12:30 a.m. Bristol police first attempted to stop a motor vehicle for traveling at a high speed. The vehicle continued over Mt. Hope Bridge to Boyd's Lane and Anthony Road into Common Fence Point. The vehicle was finally stopped on Massachusetts Boulevard. Police detected a strong aroma of alcohol on the operator, Jordan Dickau, 21, of South Glastonbury, CT. Portsmouth High School students arrived to school this morning to police officers patrolling campus after a suspicious note was found in the school Monday night. A Portsmouth woman was arrested Friday after police discovered bags of heroin, an AK-47 and other illegal weapons in her Child Street apartment. Mary Connell, 60, of 22 Child St., Apt. A, is accused of selling heroin out of her Portsmouth apartment. Detectives had been watching the Child Street residence for several months. During one point, Connell was seen delivering heroin to an informant, according to Portsmouth police. On Friday, police conducted a search of the residence. Officers seized the following: small packages of heroin; more than $2,000 in cash; more than three ounces of marijuana; and several weapons, including an AK-47, a rifle and a 25-caliber handgun. Portsmouth police arrested 17 underage Roger Williams University students Thursday after they were allegedly seen drinking at a local bar. Police held an underage drinking operation at two bars, including The Beach House on Thursday evening. Police say an undercover officer watched as 17 Roger Williams University students, who were all under age 21, purchased alcohol at The Beach House. After being under surveillance, detectives and patrol entered The Beach House at 11:50 p.m. Police confiscated nine fake IDs during the operation.
