João P. Arruda begins as the new principal on July 1.
Flagged by his wife and many Portsmouth supporters Wednesday night, the Little Compton School Committee voted unanimously to hire João P. Arruda to be the new principal of Wilbur-McMahon School. He starts his three-year contract on July 1. Arruda comes on after Principal Jim Gibney announced his resignation last month. Interim Principal and Curriculum Director Janet Griffith's last day is Friday. Committee Chairman Don Gomez said Thursday morning that Arruda comes from the assistant principal post at Portsmouth Middle School, and has been involved with that school district for 28 years. Gomez said those from Portsmouth arrived to Little Compton last night to support Arruda's new job, although a bit surprised and sad to see him go. Arruda …

In the final game of the season, Cole Middle School faced off against Portsmouth in Unified Basketball, getting the win. “I really like how much everybody worked together,” said Colby Anderson during a pizza party for both teams after the game. This is the first time unified sports has been done on the middle school level in Rhode Island. It’s a collaboration between Special Olympics and Rhode Island Interscholastic Sports. “Unified sports is the idea of taking students in the middle school and pairing them with individuals with intellectual disabilities,” explained Patti Carosotto, coach for the Cole team. “So … it’s being unified, it’s not what happens on the court, it’s what happens off the court.... It’s all about meeting new people…

Portsmouth Middle School held its Intergenerational Day on Wednesday at the school.
Portsmouth Middle School opened its doors this week to some special visitors, resulting in new friendships to last a lifetime. About 15 members of the Portsmouth Multi Purpose Senior Center visited the middle school on Wednesday as part of Intergenerational Day. The Patriots force a goal on a corner kick and get a goal from Mary Kate McGuire to take the middle school championship.
The Portsmouth Middle School girls’ soccer team is the new state champion, using a goal by Wickford and a goal from Mary Kate McGuire to win 2-0 Wednesday night at Gaudet Middle School, Middletown. Portsmouth got the only goal it would need about halfway through the second half. (See video.) A corner kick from Michaela Kosoff went off a Wickford defender standing on the goal line and into the net for an "own goal." McGuire added a second goal for the Patriots with 6:22 remaining. It took her a couple attempts, as the Wickford goalkeeper initially turned her away before she hit a rebound in. Wickford mounted its best offensive surge in the final five minutes, but Portsmouth defended three corner kicks and several close throw-ins without …

I am unable to open the Grade 8 list; it seems to be trying but after waiting 5 minutes I gave up. The picture that comes up on the screen is very small and unreadable. Could you please send me a readable scan of the 8th grade supply list? No longer live in RI and need it so I can mail supplies. Thx - MG   more ›
