As temperatures could possibly reach the triple digits, local officials are reminding Portsmouth residents to be careful in the heat.
Portsmouth Fire Chief Jeffrey P. Lynch is reminding residents to stay cool today as temperatures inch closer to triple-digits. Lynch said residents should, "Stay out of the sun. Stay hydrated. And, check in on neighbors who are elderly or ill." Whether or not a regional shelter with Middletown will be open is unknown at this time, but unlikely. According to Lynch, very few people visit such a shelter when open. The hot temps, as well as oppressive humidity, are expected to continue through Saturday. A heat advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. this evening with temperatures expected to reach between 95 and 100. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is predicting that air quality will reach unhealthy levels in the southern half of Rhode Island today. The poor air quality will be due to elevated ground level ozone concentrations as temperatures reach close to 100. All regular RIPTA buses and trolleys, but excluding special services, will be free today due to the unhealthy air quality. Ozone is a major component of smog and is formed by the photochemical reaction of pollutants emitted by motor vehicles, industry and other sources in the presence of elevated temperatures and sunlight.
