Scotland makes its celebrated return to Newport this season to compete against USA in the Newport International Polo Series this Saturday, June 15, at 5 p.m. The Scottish team will make its 10th appearance in the polo series, defending its glorious 2012 victory against USA. “The Scots have brought a secret weapon each year, and we will be on our guard,” stated Dan Keating, captain of the USA team. "Polo is an international sport, played in over 80 countries around the globe, and we are honored to have teams traveling great distances to play in Newport." It may not be the official start of the Newport polo season, but this weekend's chukker is sure to get the ball rollin' and crowds cheering before the season begins. The Newport Rotary Club's annual benefit match will take place at the polo grounds of Glen Farm on Saturday, May 25. Gates open at 4 p.m. Hosted by the Newport Polo Club, the match features the home team, Newport, playing against a regional challenger in a classic six-chukker dual. All proceeds from the event will go to the Rotary club's many charitable initiatives. A faithful Rotary Polo Committee of volunteers organizes this annual benefit match, selling $10 general admission tickets. (Kids 12 and under are free.) Newport Polo's new baby gelding needs a name! And, Newport polo is looking to fans to help! The Newport International Polo Series is holding a Facebook contest to name its 3-year old, bay thoroughbred. The winning name will be announced Friday, March 15, for a prize of a weekend getaway for two to Vermont’s Stowe Mountain Lodge for two nights, and includes two-day adult lift tickets, valid this season or next season. Back by popular demand, beach polo returns to the Newport Winter Festival on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23 and 24, at noon at Easton's Beach for an exciting exhibition match of equine polo each day, weather permitting. Beach polo, organized by Newport Polo Inc., will feature two teams competing each day in a match composed of four periods of play, seven minutes per period. The Newport International Polo Series, presented by Rhode Island BMW Centers, is pleased to announce the debut of Italy on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. in a 6-chukker match against USA. Competing for Italy will be a team from from one of Italy's 15 polo clubs, a significant footprint for the sport where only about 150 players play year-round, even on beaches and on frozen Alpine lakes in winter. Italy has risen to prominence on the international stage of polo, winning bronze after defeating England in the FIP World Championship last October. The Jamaicans have a long standing rivalry against USA, and drew a near-record crowd last season that enjoyed a USA comeback in the second half but lost by a goal.
