Portsmouth Men Honored for Lifesaving Heroics

Police officers, firefighters, corrections officer receive 2012 State Lifesaving Medals at State House ceremony.

The following is from a press release.  Michael Eyre and David Sieben of Portsmouth were among a group of Rhode Islanders honored by Governor Lincoln Chafee and Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis with 2012 State Lifesaving Medals, the state’s highest award for heroics while rescuing people from death.  “When I visit schools to talk with students about the importance of public service, I always emphasize that there are many ways to contribute to your community. Man Killed in Pineapple Inn Fire Identified

The man who was killed in an early morning fire on Sunday was identified as 55-year-old Steve Francis.

Police have identified the man who was killed during a fire at the Pineapple Inn on Coddington Highway early Sunday morning as 55-year-old Steve Francis, a former Westerly resident. Francis had been staying at the motel for the last few months, police officials said. The fire broke out at 12:11 a.m. Sunday. According to a release from the Newport Police Department, Room 115, which Francis had been staying in, was fully engulfed in flames when police arrived. Motel guests “made heroic attempts” to rescue Francis from the room, reports said. At one point, bystanders were able to reach him through the bathroom window, but were not able to pull him out. Efforts to enter through the door and rescue Francis were unsuccessful due to heavy fire …

1 Dead in Early Morning Fire at Pineapple Inn

One man was killed and nine were displaced after a fire broke out early Sunday morning at the Pineapple Inn.

A man in his early fifties was killed in a structure fire at the Pineapple Inn early Sunday morning, fire officials said. A firefighter sustained a smoke inhalation injury and was transported to Newport Hospital, where he was treated and released.  The Newport Fire Department responded to the fire when it was reported via 911 by a caller from the inn after the fire alarm went off.  First responding crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the front door and windows of a single motel room at the inn. Firefighters entered using the front door and knocked down the main body of fire to find that the fire had extended into the common attic. The roof was ventilated, which stopped the fire from traveling throughout the attic of the entire …

Newport Firefighters Local 1080 To Hold Charity Golf Outing Friday

Newport firefighters will raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) this Friday at the 34th annual Charity Golf Scramble.

Newport firefighters, Local 1080, will hold its 34th annual Charity Golf Scramble to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) this Friday, Aug. 13. The tournament will take place at Green Valley Country Club, located on Union Street. The event will begin with a shotgun start at noon. Golfers should arrive no later than 11:30 a.m. Registration for one golfer costs $125, and registration for a foursome costs $500. Golfers can register as a single, twosome, threesome, or foursome. In the event a team has fewer  than four players, Newport firefighters will join that team. Registration includes a cookout lunch, ribs and chicken dinner, golf, cart, beer, soda, a gift bag, MDA donations and cash prizes. Prizes will be awarded to the top …

NPD Hosts National Night Out

The Newport Police Department held its annual National Night Out event Thursday evening at Easton's Beach. Patch sends a thank-you to all those who attended and stopped by our table.

The Newport Police Department held its annual National Night Out event Thursday evening at Easton's Beach. Off and on again rain showers didn't deter many families from attending and hearing about community services available in their neighborhood. Participating organizations at the event included the Newport and Middletown Police Departments, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Air Force 143rd Security Forces Squadron, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, the Office of the Attorney General, Newport Fire Department, the Boys and Girls Club and many others, including Patch.  We, at Patch, want to thank all of the families and children that stopped by our table wanting to learn more about us.
