The total funded program of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Newport exceeded $935 million in 2012. Of its total operating budget, more than $581 million was spent by NUWC Newport in payroll, construction, facility support and local contracts, according to a recent report released by NUWC. The command is the largest federal activity in Rhode Island in terms of personnel and payroll. NUWC Newport’s employee base includes 2,748 government civilian employees and 31 military members with a total gross payroll of over $296 million. Of the full-time government civilian staff, 74 percent are classified as scientists or engineers and approximately 36 percent have graduate degrees. Members and staff from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation will visit the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Newport today to observe Portsmouth High School students at work in the Undersea Technology Apprentice Program (UTAP). UTAP is a paid summer program that allows high school students to focus their studies on electrical engineering and physics, especially buoyancy and hydrodynamics. The program provides an engineering design lab experience during which the students build and re-engineer an underwater vehicle and then test it against each other’s designs. This year’s UTAP problem scenario focuses on location and retrieval operations. NUWC Newport offered two sessions of UTAP this summer to 44 high school students from NUWC …

Fourteen members of a special study team at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport have won the International Test and Evaluation Association (ITEA) Technical Achievement Award. This annual award program recognizes individuals and teams for outstanding achievement in applying instrumentation, information technology, modeling and simulation, time-space-positioning information, electro-optics technology, or other test and evaluation (T&E) technology to cause a T&E program to be better, faster, and less expensive. Base consolidations and realignments will add 863 jobs to Naval Station Newport.
A cost saving measure by the Department of Defense (DoD) will give a well-needed boost to Aquidneck Island, resulting in the creation of 863 new jobs. In 2005, Congress established the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC), which provided military base consolidations recommendations. According to BRAC, the program would save federal taxpayers $4.2 billion dollars annually. Although these realignment projects meant several closures across the country and included loses to Newport Naval Station as well, the impact to the Newport Naval Station was net positive for job creation.
