Mosquito Threat Causes Sport Schedule Move in Portsmouth

Evening sports, including games, are being moved to the afternoon due to mosquitoes.

The Portsmouth School District is following the lead of North Kingston, Bristol-Warren and Chariho school districts, and moving evening sport activities to the afternoon.  The school district posted this release on their Web site:  Dear members of the Portsmouth High School Community, The Rhode Island Department of Health has issued an advisory regarding EEE-mosquito-borne illness. They have urged schools to employ “smart scheduling” of outdoor activities in order to minimize the risk of mosquito bites for students, coaches, and spectators. At this time, the Portsmouth High School athletic department is actively working to shift evening contests, where possible, to the afternoon in order to avoid being outdoors between dusk and dawn, the …

Town Treats Island Park After Hearing Complaints About Pesky Mosquitoes

Island Park residents have complained about a large population of mosquitoes in the area.

The Portsmouth Department of Public Works (DPW) began treating catch basins after receiving several mosquito complaints from residents in the north end of town.  However, town officials say the mosquito population is "as expected" this year.  "The mosquito population is as anticipated," said David Kehew, DPW director. "We had a high moon tide around the 4th, this coupled with the warm weather is the first round of the adult salt marsh mosquitoes. "Public works has treated the catch basins and road side drainage ditches throughout town. We treat approximately 2,800 catch basins each year, and still need to treat approximately 200 more basins on the south end of town." Portsmouth Man Remains Hospitalized for EEE

Portsmouth man in his twenties remains in critical condition, says RI Dept. of Health spokeswoman.

A Portsmouth man in his twenties is listed in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital, said RI Department of Health spokesperson Annemarie Beardsworth Thursday. The man, who is not being identified by the Department of Health, is being treated for the first known case this year of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). Health officials believe the man came down with EEE at an outing held in Southeastern Massachusetts. The onset of his symptoms occurred on Aug. 5, prior to that evening's start of aerial spraying in southeastern Massachusetts. There have been no other reported cases of EEE in Rhode Island or Massachusetts this year. Symptoms usually present themselves within two to 10 days of exposure.
