Portsmouth's Melville Grille Named 'Best Seafood Chowder'

The Melville Grille in Portsmouth took home first place in the Best Seafood Chowder category of the 32nd Annual Polar Seltzer Great Chowder Cook-Off.

  Thousands of chowder lovers savored the sumptuous soups of the best chefs at the 32nd Annual Polar Seltzer Great Chowder Cook-Off, held Saturday at the Newport Yachting Center. But they also had a job to do — to determine who was going to take home the coveted titles of “Best Clam,” “Best Seafood” and “Best Creative” chowder and thousands in prize money. Portsmouth's Melville Grille To Compete in 32nd Annual Chowder Cook Off

The 32nd Annual Newport Chowder Cook Off is on Saturday, and don't forget to chase your chowder with some oysters at the city's inaugural Oyster Festival.

  The 32nd Annual Polar Seltzer Great Chowder Cook-Off kicks off this Saturday, June 1, at the Newport Yachting Center.  Portsmouth's Melville Grille will compete again this year to defend its winning title in the Seafood Category.  Discounted tickets will be available through May 31. The Yachting Center announced it will offer “Ten Clams Off” its $25 day-of event ticket starting Friday, March 22, at noon through Wednesday, May 1. Portsmouth Restaurant to Defend Chowder Champion Title

Melville Grille in Portsmouth, which earned “Best Seafood” bragging rights all year, will bring back with its Portuguese Fish Chowder recipe to this year's competition.

  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” That’s the mindset that two of last year’s defending champions are taking as they prepare for this year’s 32nd Annual Polar Seltzer Great Chowder Cook-Off. The competition will take place Saturday, June 1, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Newport Yachting Center in Newport. The Melville Grille in Portsmouth earned “Best Seafood” bragging rights all year. The Newport Yachting Center's 31st annual Schweppes Great Chowder Cook-Off will be held this Saturday, June 2, from noon to 6 p.m.

Are you ready for some chow-DAH? The Newport Yachting Center’s 31st annual Schweppes Great Chowder Cook-Off kicks off the traditional summer season in Newport this Saturday, June 2, from noon to 6 p.m. Two dozen competitors will vie for “Best Clam," “Best Seafood" and “Best Creative” chowder glory. The event will also feature all-you-can-eat “chowda" or "chow-dah," the Clam Cake Chow-Down competition, live music and a variety of entertainment for all ages. 'Eat' the Competition  Among the competitors this year will be a visitor from the east — the Bunratty Manor Hotel from County Clare, Ireland, which was recently crowned champion of the Irish National Chowder Cook-Off. Melville Grille Wins 2nd Place for Seafood Chowder

Newport Yachting Center’s Knorr Great Chowder Cook-Off celebrated its 30th anniversary this weekend.

This past Saturday proved a success for the Newport Yachting Center’s Knorr Great Chowder Cook-Off which celebrated its 30th anniversary with more than 10,000 guests and lots of tasty chowder to go around. Melville Grille had a great day, taking home second place in the Seafood Chowder category with its Portuguese shrimp chowder, along with the “Best Decorated Booth” prize. Owner Scott Cowell, a cook-off first-timer, was raring to go as the first guests arrived in the morning. “This is our signature chowder at Mellville Grille,” said Cowell. “I have family, friends and fantastic people helping me out today, which is great.” Chowder was judged in three categories: Clam Chowder, Creative Chowder and Seafood Chowder. The Newport Yachting Center announced this year's winners of the 30th annual Chowder Cook-Off.

Thousands of chowder lovers savored the sumptuous soups of the best chefs at the 30th Annual Knorr Great Chowder Cook-Off, held yesterday at the Newport Yachting Center on 4 Commercial Wharf.  But they also had a job to do --- to determine who was going to take home the coveted titles of “Best Clam,” “Best Seafood” and “Best Creative” chowder and thousands in prize money. Bites Nearby: Melville Grille's Portuguese Fish Chowder Is Contender at Cook-Off, Winner on Menu

A closer look at one of the local contenders in the Newport Chowder Cook-off this weekend reveals pleasant surprises on Narragansett Bay.

Tucked away from the mainstream of Aquidneck Island is the Melville Grille, located at the East Passage Marina in Portsmouth. Yes, it is quite a surprise to find it nestled against the bay and surrounded by all manner of boats. It is a great place to eat. Chef Scott Cowell gives dishes his own twist. Healthy options and gluten free are among his many menu choices. This year Chef Cowell is entering his Portuguese fish chowder in the Annual Newport Chowder Cook-Off. Of course we had to try it.
