Fill This Empty Portsmouth Storefront: Ma Goetzinger's Clothing Store

What kind of business do you think should go here?

While some businesses in Portsmouth have been around for "as long as you can remember," some have closed their doors, either due to poor economic times or simply moving to a new location. Ma Goetzinger's, a clothing store that dressed Portsmouth women for more than 41 years, recently closed its doors after owner Carrol Goetzinger and her husband decided to retire.  Goetzinger says she plans to close the business and decide later what to do with the property she owns.  However, we want to know what businesses you think would thrive in that location. What type of business would you like to inhabit at this location? Should it remain a house or become another business?

Ma Goetzinger's Clothing Store To Close After 41 Years of Business

The store is expected to close at the end of February, but merchandise is selling fast.

Ma Goetzinger's, a clothing store that dressed Portsmouth women for more than 41 years, is closing its doors.  Owner Carrol Goetzinger and her husband have decided to retire.  "It's been such a difficult decision," she said. "It's been a wonderful experience. I'd love to go on forever, but I'm not as young as I used to be." Ma Goetzinger's began as a juniors' store 41 years ago and later expanded into offering all sizes for women. Today, the store carries jeans, T-shirts, jackets, skirts, accessories, custom jewelry, scarves, handbags and more. "I started this store 41 years ago," Goetzinger said. "My husband has wanted to retire for several years. Portsmouth will miss Ma's! I bought my prom dresses there in the eightys and have taken my kids there for their clothes. While I find it hard to believe that either of them is "well beyond retirement age" they are both so vibrant and seem like lovely people I hope they find wonderful new experiences as they close up this chapter in their lives.
