U.S. Senator Jack Reed Announces $150K Grant to Help RI Dairy Farmers

U.S. Senator Jack Reed joined local farmers Monday at Escobar’s Highland Farm in Portsmouth to announce a major new federal grant for the Rhode Island Dairy Farms Cooperative.

Got cheese? Rhody Fresh now does.  Thanks to a $150,000 federal grant, Rhody Fresh Milk will offer a new Rhody Fresh cheese made from locally-produced milk.  Last fall, Rhody Fresh Milk began offering an artisan cheese at local farmers markets. Thanks to this grant, the group of eight Rhode Island dairy farms will now increase production and supply its locally-made cheese in markets throughout the state.  U.S. Senator Jack Reed announced the federal grant at a special visit to Escobar's Farm in Portsmouth on Monday. The federal funds are being awarded in an effort to help local dairy farms create jobs and increase production.  "People want and need locally-produced foods. They also want to be assured they can buy locally-produced foods…

Louis Escobar 'Speaks from the Heart' About Giving Back, Community Rewards

Louis Escobar and wife, Jane, own and operate Escobar Highland Dairy Farm at 251 Middle Road in Portsmouth. The farm has been around since the 1920s.

Louis Escobar, owner of Escobar Highland Dairy Farm, has a welcoming and honest demeanor. It only takes a few moments of being around him to feel his passion for what he does. He calls it “speaking from the heart." Although dairy farming is the Escobar’s main source of income, the 98-acre farm is known by the community for much more. The farm puts on breathtaking fireworks for the Fourth of July, a corn maze and hay rides in the fall and sells Christmas trees during the holiday season. Escobar has created a place where adults and kids alike can learn and enjoy nature, a place for the community to come and bond. “We provide open space and rural character to our community that so many communities like Portsmouth are losing,” Escobar says. He…

Escobar Corn Maze to Hold Opening Weekend Despite Hurricane Irene

Escobar Farm Corn Maze's 12th annual Opening Weekend takes place, Aug. 26 through Aug. 28.

Despite the impending Hurricane Irene blowing up the East Coast, the corn will grow on as Escobar Farm Corn Maze holds its grand opening this weekend, Aug. 27 and 28. After 12 years of working with famed-maze designer Brett Herbst, who has designed more than 2,000 corn mazes throughout the country, the Escobar family looks forward to unveiling a new "fall fun" labyrinth for all-ages to enjoy. “We aren’t too worried about the hurricane wrecking the maze,” said Escobar Farm’s Louis Escobar. “It could give us a little bit of extra work and knock some corn down but most of the crops can withstand a lot and we should be able to weather the storm fairly well.” As for turnout, Escobar felt that last year, which hosted a Harry Potter Day later in …

Louis Escobar Says 4-H Fair Is 'Exciting Event'

Local farm owner and 4-H Fair volunteer describes his time as president of the fair committee.

Louis Escobar enthusiastically describes some of the upcoming activities at this weekend’s 4-H fair: cow chip bingo, a chicken dinner, live animals and The Toe Jam Puppet Band. “I went to St. Philomena’s and I saw [Toe Jam] and I said, ‘My gosh;’ the little kids were having so much fun. The first year we did it here, I got up with the little kids,” says Escobar, laughing. President of the Fair Committee for the past three years, Escobar is used to running things as head of Escobar Highland Farms in Portsmouth. The Portsmouth-native is also very familiar with 4-H, having been a part of the organization for the past 60 years.     “Most volunteers aren’t [with 4-H] quite that long,” says Louis’ spouse, Jane Escobar. Watermelon Eating-Contest, Live Farm Animals Highlight Annual 4-H Fair This Weekend

The Eastern Rhode Island chapter of 4-H makes it annual visit to Portsmouth this weekend.

Can you eat your weight in watermelon? Can you pull a tractor farther than the island's best strongman? Can you eat ice cream without getting a brain freeze? All these fun activities will be held at the Eastern Rhode Island 4-H's annual summer fair being held at Glen Park this weekend, July 16 and 17. President of the Fair committee Louis Escobar recently spoke about the attractions available at this year’s event: amusements, food, music, competition, exhibits and live animals. It’s “about as much as activity as this fairground can accommodate,” says Escobar. To kick off the gala, opening night will feature a chicken dinner (tickets must be purchased beforehand). Vendors will also be present throughout the weekend with classic fair cuisine…
