Portsmouth To Hire New Principal for Hathaway Elementary School

A job announcement was posted this morning for a new principal.

The Portsmouth School District is seeking a new principal, reports the local blog Hard Deadlines.  According to the blog, the school district posted a new job listing on the site SchoolSpring this morning seeking candidates for the position of school principal at Hathaway Elementary School.  The position is currently held by Robert Ettinger, who worked at Elmhurst Elementary School before its closing. Several school leaders in the district have left in the past year, including Portsmouth High School Assistant Principal Jeff Goss.  There has been no other announcement about Ettinger's departure from the school district.  The full job advertisement can be viewed here.

Children's Book Author, Illustrator Visit Hathaway School

Anika and Christopher Denise paid a special visit to the school Wednesday.

Barrington couple Anika and Christopher Denise paid a special visit to Hathaway Elementary School on Wednesday.  Anika has written two children's books: "Bella and Stella Come Home" and "Pigs Love Potatoes." Christopher has illustrated both of Anika's books, as well as "The Red Wall" series and "Tugg and Teeny" series to name just a few.    The team visited Hathaway to share the process of their work and inspire the kids in reading, writing and illustrating endeavors.

School Volunteer Dismisses Neuromuscular Disease, Gives Back [VIDEO]

Despite challenges from a lifelong neuromuscular disease, Portsmouth resident Kathryn Allen has lived a very full life and now spends her time volunteering at a local school.

One local grandmother says her volunteer work at Hathaway Elementary School is "ordinary" and "something all parents should do." But what this Portsmouth resident has accomplished while living with a neuromuscular disease is anything but ordinary.  "It's just fun to be in the classroom with the kids. As long as I don't do anything physical...it's fine," says longtime Portsmouth resident Kathryn Allen, who has lived with the neuromuscular disease Myasthenia Gravis since she was a child. Myasthenia Gravis, also referred to as simply MG, "is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that is characterized by fluctuating weakness of the voluntary muscle groups," according to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America Web site.  About 20 …

Portsmouth Public Education Foundation to Celebrate Its 10th Anniversary

Mark your calendars! A fall showcase is planned for Nov. 3 at the Glen Manor House.

The Portsmouth Public Education Foundation (PPEF) passes along this information about its 10th anniverary celebration, which will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3, at Glen Manor House in Portsmouth   The public is invited to enjoy appetizers and a cash bar at the Fall Showcase and Social. You'll also be able to view exhibits of past Educational Excellence grant recipients and the current "Teacher of the Year." Exhibits from Melville Elementary School, Portsmouth Middle School and Portsmouth High School will be featured. Many local businesses have offered their support to public education by donating to the silent auction. Hathaway Elementary School Welcomes New Secretary

Emily Rahilly joins the staff at Hathaway Elementary School this year.

A new face will greet students when they start classes at Hathaway Elementary School next week. Emily Rahilly, who co-owns West Main Pizza along with her husband, has been hired as the school's new secretary. Rahilly is no stranger to the Portsmouth school system. This mother of two has been an active participant in several community organizations, including currently serving as secretary of the Portsmouth Gridiron Club. She previously worked with adult learners at the Aquidneck Island Adult Learning Center. "I'm so excited about this job," she said. "I love the kids."

PHOTO: Worker Installs New Floors at Hathaway Elementary School

Workers were seen installing new floor tiles at Hathaway Elementary School on Wednesday.

The first day of school may still be two weeks away, but Hathaway Elementary School was bustling with activity Wednesday morning. Workers were installing new floor tiles in several classrooms. Classroom furniture lined the hallways due to the work. Approximately three to four classrooms will receive new floor tiles prior to the first day of school for teachers on Aug. 30. Students start their first day of classes on Aug. 31. The classrooms were in need of this "upgrade" for some time, said Principal Robert Ettinger.

Whiz Kid: Daniel Carnevale Completes Reading Challenge

Daniel Carnevale, a first-grader at Hathaway Elementary School, recently completed a "Journey Through Books" literary challenge.

This week, we spotlight Hathaway Elementary School first-grader Daniel Carnevale as Portsmouth Patch's Whiz Kid of the Week. Name: Daniel Carnevale School: Grade 1, Hathaway Elementary School Accomplishment: Daniel recently completed a literary challenge at the school called "Journey Through Books." Students are asked to read at least 100 pages in each literary genre chosen by the school. The genres range from "natural science" to "sports." Key to Awesomeness: Daniel, a member of the Portsmouth Pirates soccer team, received the Sportsmanship Award earlier this year. Daniel also plays baseball as a member of the West Main Pizza Little League team.

Name: Nathan Hilyard School: Grade 1, Hathaway Elementary School Accomplishment: Nathan recently completed a literary challenge at the school called "Journey Through Books." Students are asked to read at least 100 pages in each literary genre chosen by the school. The genres range from "natural science" to "sports." Key to Awesomeness: Nathan is also an active member of the Portsmouth Little League and also plays T-ball. Nathan says he "likes to dance" in his spare time. He was also selected to read the poem "Our Flag" during the Hathaway Elementary School Flag Day ceremony.

Students are asked to read at least 100 pages in each literary genre chosen by the school. The genres range from "natural science" to "sports." Key to Awesomeness: Nathan also says he enjoys playing baseball at the YMCA as a member of the blue team. He was also selected to start this year's Flag Day ceremony at Hathaway Elementary School.
