Nearly 200 enthusiastic cheerleaders representing nine high schools from around the state competed in first rounds of a competition held Monday night at Portsmouth High School.
Nearly 200 enthusiastic cheerleaders representing nine high schools from around the state descended upon Portsmouth High School Monday night in a preliminary round of competition, all leading to the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) Competition Cheerleading Championships in March. This is the first Rhode Island Interscholastic Cheerleading Competition, of which nine teams competed, being scored on 13 various categories ranging from Execution of Routine to Expression and Enthusiasm. Until recently, competitive cheerleading as a sport has been unrecognized, but is making progress. Seeking their first win of the season, the girls of Portsmouth High School lost to the team from Middletown High School Wednesday night.
The Portsmouth High School girls' gymnastics team (0-7) lost to Middletown High School (5-1) on Wednesday night, Jan. 19, at the gymnastics competition at the Newport County YMCA in Middletown. While showing improvements and great individual efforts, as a team they did not have enough to defeat Middletown. Overall Team Results: Middletown Islanders - 135.5 Portsmouth Patriots - 126.35 The Patriots gymnasts will next compete against Barrington, South Kingstown and North Kingstown High Schools in a meet to be held at the Newport County YMCA on Jan. 29 at 3:30 p.m.

The PHS Patriots' girls held their own against the defending champs, placing fourth with a score of 121.10 on Sunday afternoon.
The Portsmouth High School Patriots' gymnastic team took fourth place this Sunday at a meet held at the YMCA in Middletown. Featured below are the rankings and final scores: 1st Place - Middletown Islanders - 131.50 2nd Place - LaSalle Academy Rams - 131.25 3rd Place - Coventry Oakers - 126.05 4th Place - Portsmouth Patriots - 121.10 The Patriots gymnastics team will take on Barrington High, LaSalle Academy and Middletown High on Sunday, Jan. 9, at East Bay Gymnastics in Bristol.
