The final results are expected this afternoon.

As the Board of Elections tallies the absentee ballots today, incumbent State House of Representatives candidate Dan Reilly, District 72 (Middletown, Portsmouth), remains optimistic about the race. “At this point, I am anxiously awaiting the results of the mail ballots, which I do believe will make this race even closer, if not successful for me,” said Reilly. Although challenger Linda Finn of Middletown leads by 87 votes, the absentee ballots are still outstanding. Between the two towns, over 1700 voters requested a mail-in ballot. The Board of Elections said an official count will be available this afternoon. Finn won Middletown by 296 votes but lost Portsmouth by 209 votes. So Far, Twice as Many Lawmakers Refuse Annual Pay Increase This Year

Twenty-six Senate and House members have declined their annual COLA pay increase that started on July 1. This is twice as many as last year.

The growing number of lawmakers who have refused a pay increase this year is already more than double than last year. According to House Spokesman Larry Berman, 26 of the 113 Senate and House members have formally declined the 3.2 percent raise, including Rep. Daniel Reilly, who represents constituents in all three municipalities on Aquidneck island.   Every year the salary is adjusted, based U.S. Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) for the 12-month average ending December 2011. Last year, legislators received a 1.6 percent increase, including Rep. Reilly. “I didn't know we received a raise last year,” said Reilly. “I would have declined it, for all the reasons I declined this one,”  he said.   Reilly has referenced a …

Is it time for a Full Time Legislature ? Not many can afford to take so much time out of work to go to the State House. If we reduce the number of Sen. and Rep's ,then pay them a decent wage, would we have a more diverse group in our Legislature ? I would like to run but have to pay my bills. I'm sure others think the same way.   more ›

Rep. Dan Reilly Declines Legislative Pay Increase

Rep. Daniel P. Reilly (R-Dist. 72 Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport) has declined a 3.2 percent pay increase this year.

The following is from a State House press release.  Rep. Daniel P. Reilly (R-Dist. 72 Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport) has declined a 3.2 percent pay increase that was given to all state legislators at the beginning of this current fiscal year.  Effective July 1, state legislators were given a 3.2 percent pay increase pursuant to an amendment to the state constitution that took effect in the mid-1990’s. Tax Officials Will Start Talks to Collect Former Portsmouth Couple's Debt

Tax officials say they will take court action in Florida, if necessary, to collect $1.3 million in back taxes.

Tax officials will begin talks and seek court action in Florida, if necessary, to collect $1.3 million in taxes owed by former Portsmouth couple William and Marielle Reilly, reports The Providence Journal Monday.  Last week, the state's Supreme Court ruled that the Reillys must pay back $1.3 million in taxes owed from the late 1990s. The Reillys are the parents of state Rep. Dan Reilly (Republican- District 72, Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth).  According to court records, in August 2008, the tax administrator filed a complaint in the Providence County Superior Court alleging that defendants, William and Marielle Reilly, had failed to pay Rhode Island income taxes for tax years 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. Poll: Should Patch Have Named a Politician In This Story?

If you wrote the story, what would you have done differently?

It's not every day you hear constructive criticism about a published post on Portsmouth Patch, but I like to think it makes for a better site overall and source of information for you, the readers.  Portsmouth Patch is about community and that means involvement. When the community speaks out about a certain article, we listen.  On Friday, I heard from several of you - through e-mail, comments and in person - about the article concerning a court case involving state Rep. Dan Reilly's parents.  The Rhode Island Supreme Court has ruled that William J. and Marielle T. Reilly of Florida, formerly of Portsmouth, must pay back unpaid taxes totaling $1.3 million, according to The Providence Journal.  Portsmouth Patch readers commented that Rep. …

The Supreme Court has ruled that a former Portsmouth couple must pay late taxes totaling more than $1.3 million.

The state's most delinquent taxpayers, a former Portsmouth couple and parents of State Rep. Dan Reilly, must pay back all unpaid taxes according to a court ruling Thursday.  The Rhode Island Supreme Court has ruled that William J. and Marielle T. Reilly of Florida, formerly of Portsmouth, must pay back unpaid taxes totaling $1.3 million, reports The Providence Journal.  In 2011, the Reillys appeared on the list of top 100 most-delinquent personal income taxpayers in the state of Rhode Island. The couple of Boca Raton, FL, then owed the state $1,372,976.85 in unpaid income taxes. Their son, Rep. Rep. Dan Reilly Announces He Will Run for a Second Term

Rep. Daniel Reilly announced that he will run for re-election this November.

Rep. Dan P. Reilly (Republican, Dist. 72 - Middletown, Newport and Portsmouth) is not the ordinary new college graduate. This spring, Reilly not only graduated from Providence College with a bachelor's degree in general studies, but he also announced his plans to run for a second term. “I’ve had what I’d like to say a pretty aggressive freshman term,” said Reilly. “I’m in the minority party, but that certainly doesn’t mean that I don’t have a voice.”   Reilly serves on six committees. The 23-year-old Portsmouth resident will attend Roger Williams Law School in the fall. When Reilly is not in the classroom or at the State House, he also serves as a volunteer EMT on the Bristol Fire Department. After losing his first election in 2008, he …
