Tiverton Man Died of Cardiac Arrest While in Police Custody

The state Department of Health releases new information about the death of Craig Raposa, a Tiverton man who died on Feb. 3, 2012.

The state Department of Health says "cardiopulmonary arrest," also known as cardiac arrest, resulted in the death of former Portsmouth High School student Craig Raposa.  This is the first time a cause of death has been released for the Tiverton man, who died during policy custody on Feb. 3, 2012.  The cause of death was determined to be "cardiopulmonary arrest during prone restraint following physical altercation due to schizophrenia and obesity with cardiomegaly," wrote Dara Chadwick, spokesperson for the Department of Health, in an e-mail Thursday.  On Wednesday, the Attorney General's Office released the findings of a grand jury's review into the death of Raposa.  The grand jury found that the actions by Portsmouth police officers were …

Grand Jury Finds Police Actions 'Lawful' in Death of Tiverton Man

The grand jury has concluded its investigation into the death of Craig Raposa, who died in police custody on Feb. 3, 2012.

The statewide grand jury today concluded its investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding the death of Craig Raposa.  Raposa died while in the custody of members of the Portsmouth Police Department on Feb. 3, 2012 in Portsmouth, according to a press release from the Attorney General's Office. "The statewide grand jury has determined that the actions by the officers were lawful and legally justified," according to the release.  This incident was investigated by State Police with the Office of Attorney General, and presented to the grand jury. "It is the responsibility of the grand jury to determine the facts, apply the law to those facts and to decide whether anyone may be charged with criminal wrongdoing," according to the …

State Police End Probe Into Craig Raposa's Death

Craig Raposa, 25, died following a struggle with Portsmouth police.

State Police have completed their investigation into the death of Tiverton resident Craig Raposa, reports WPRI.com.  State Police have given their final report to the Attorney General's Office, but the findings are not being released at this time, according to the article.  Raposa, 25, a Portsmouth native and graduate of Portsmouth High School, died on Feb. 3 of unknown causes following a struggle with Portsmouth police, in which pepper spray was used.  Portsmouth police said Raposa had a history of mental illness; however, his mother blamed authorities for her son's death. Raposa's mother said her son was bipolar.  The incident now remains under the investigation of the Attorney General's Office.

Investigation Continues Into Death of Craig Raposa

The Attorney General's Office says the investigation is ongoing.

Nearly two months since the unexpected death of Craig Raposa, authorities say they still can't release further explanation about what led to the Tiverton man's death.  A spokesperson for the Attorney General's Office says the investigation is continuing and cannot comment further on the case.  "It's ongoing," said spokesperson Amy Kempe. "We can't comment on the investigation, which is ongoing...When we make a conclusion, it will be made public."  According to Kempe, a "thorough review" of the case is being conducted. Raposa, 25, died on Feb. 3 of unknown causes following a struggle with Portsmouth police, in which pepper spray was used.  The incident now remains under the investigation of the Attorney General's Office.

Calling hours will be held tonight for the late Craig Raposa, the Tiverton man who died of unknown causes following a struggle with Portsmouth police one week ago.  Raposa, 25, of 1 Mill St., Tiverton, died Feb. 3, 2012 unexpectedly, according to the Memorial Funeral Homes obituary.  Born in Fall River, MA, on March 15, 1986, he was the son of Brenda L. Raposa of Portsmouth. Craig graduated from Portsmouth High School in 2004 as an all-star athlete in football and baseball. He participated in Portsmouth Marty Fine Football and, while a Midget, won the 1998 state championship. Coach Says Former Student, Craig Raposa, 'Overcame' Obstacles [VIDEO]

Assistant Principal Jeff Goss recalls the late Craig Raposa as a student who "made great strides."

Craig Raposa was a student who "overcame obstacles" and "had a bright future," said Portsmouth High School Assistant Principal Jeff Goss.  The bright future was cut short Friday when 25-year-old Raposa of Tiverton was pronounced dead at Newport Hospital.  Prior to his death, Raposa was apparently involved in a struggle with Portsmouth police, who used pepper spray. State Police are now investigating the incident.  Goss, who once coached Raposa, said he was shocked when he heard the news.  "He was one of those kids that made you appreciate what you do," Goss said. He was a great guy. He always made classes go by faster. Craig and I went to a redsox game a few years ago and we gott lost on the way home. We ended up in Connecticut @ 3 am. Mother Blames Cops For Son's Death; Police Say Victim Had 'Mental Illness'

The mother of Craig Raposa speaks out about her son's death.

The mother of a 25-year-old Tiverton man, who died after an apparent struggle with Portsmouth police officers Friday, is now blaming police for her son's death.  Brenda Raposa of Portsmouth says authorities are at fault in the death of her son, Craig Raposa, reports The Newport Daily News.  She also told The Newport Daily News that her son was bipolar.
