Holiday Decorations: Is It Time They Come Down?

When do you remove Santa from the front yard: January or July?

Is it time to take down the Christmas decorations?  Some families traditionally take down their holiday decorations on New Year's Day, while others wait until much later in the month and much, much later, too.  When do you think Christmas decorations should be taken down? After New Year's Day? February? July? Tell us in the comment section below.

Where's Santa? Track Him Live from Portsmouth!

The North American Aerospace Defense Command has a website that now offers a Santa tracker mobile app to follow the jolly man's magical flight.

Portsmouth children have sent him their wish lists, sat on his lap, and left cookies and milk for his arrival. Now the only thing left for children to do is track Santa's progress as he delivers gifts around the world on Christmas Eve. Thanks to the folks behind the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) website, families worldwide can now follow Santa's Christmas journey in real time. The tradition started in 1955 after an advertisement for Sears Roebuck & Co. misprinted a telephone number for a special "Santa hotline." Instead of reaching Kris Kringle, the number put kids through to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Commander-in-Chief’s operations, according to a description on the NORAD Tracks Santa Facebook page, …

Approaching Storm May Bring a White Christmas

An active weather pattern is expected to begin on Sunday and to continue into the middle of next week.

Bing Crosby's isn't the only one dreaming of a white Christmas. With our recent warm winters, snow angels and snowmen almost seem like a thing of the past. This year, however, we might have a proper holiday backdrop. According to the National Weather Service, an active weather pattern is expected to begin today and to continue into the middle of next week. The details, including the timing and type of precipitation, remains uncertain. It all depends on the air temperature. For Sunday night, the NWS reports it might be cold enough for snow; but it would be light. Minor accumulations are possible. On Monday, a low pressure system will increase our odds at a snowfall, although the NWS warns the types and amounts are subject to change and are…

YOUR TURN: Real vs. Artificial Christmas Trees

It's a decision families make every year - are you willing to withstand the cold, sap and needles necessary for an 'authentic' Christmas?

Sure, everyone appreciates some good holiday decor. But have you ever been tempted to take it easy on yourself and purchase an artificial Christmas tree? Purists won't go near them, but for others, the thought of chopping down a tree - leaving needles, sap and leaking water in your living room - is not their idea of a happy holiday.  Despite the hassle, real trees outsell their artificial cousins by more than a 3-to-1 margin each season, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. Bear in mind, of course, artificial trees can be reused every year. Readers, what do you think? Are you undertaking the Griswold family tradition this year or are will an artificial tree do the trick for your family?

State To Hold Tree Lighting Year After Name Controversy

Gov. Chafee's office backtracks from an announcement Monday that there would be no official tree-lighting ceremony this year.

There will be a tree-lighting ceremony this year after all. Gov. Lincoln Chafee's top press aide said Tuesday she spoke in error Monday when she said there would be no tree lighting ceremony.  "There will be an official tree lighting ceremony at the State House with the Governor in attendance," said Christine Hunsinger in an email statement. No date has been set. Now, the question is, will protesters turn up again as they did last year, when Gov. Lincoln Chafee referred to the large evergreen in the middle of the State House rotonda as a holiday tree instead of a Christmas tree. The tree was erected Monday. Last December, Chafee was lambasted by GOP lawmakers, some talk show hosts, and the Roman Catholic Bishop Tobin for his decision to …
