Caleb Chafee, 18, the son of Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, was sentenced today in Washington County District Court on the charge of violating the state's social host law. Chafee pleaded no contest to the charge and was sentenced to perform 30 hours of community service, as well as pay a $500 fine, reports "The Providence Journal." The governor's son must also write an essay and visit Rhode Island Hospital. Chafee, a graduate of the Portsmouth Abbey School, was charged with violating the social host law after a graduation party occurred in Exeter on May 28. Gov. Lincoln Chafee's son will appear in court today on charges he tried to buy liquor at a Jamestown store in early April, the Providence Journal reports. Caleb Chafee, 18, is a student at Portsmouth Abbey. WPRI obtained the police report from Jamestown Police. The report states that Chafee entered the store, put two cases of beer on the counter, but then stated he did not have any money and left. Police later stopped a vehicle he was a passenger in and found cases of beer inside. Chafee is being charged with "being a person under 21 entering an establishment to buy alcohol," Boston.com reports.
