You've probably heard occasional—but perhaps not frequent—references to this winter storm as "Saturn." While it makes for some good jokes about the planet, but rather, a pre-determined name The Weather Channel gave to this latest storm. If you missed it: The Weather Channel in November announced it would name "noteworthy winter storms" in the 2012-2013 winter season. Sure, snowstorms have been informally named after the fact (remember Snowtober?) This is the first season, however, that The Weather Channel is naming them as it does hurricanes and tropical storms. Snow from the blizzard has made the sidewalks along West Main Road impassable and created a serious public safety hazard concern. The Town of Middletown has requested that RIPTA begin providing a bus service to our residents who normally use these sidewalks. The service on this route will be provided free of charge. RIPTA will be providing hourly service to the residents of Middletown beginning Tuesday and ending on Friday. The service will begin at 7:00 a.m. from Oxbow Apts and conclude at Oxbow Apts. at aprox 7:45 p.m running every hour on the hour. RIPTA will assign a RIDE vehicle, #1251, capable of transporting a maximum of sixteen (16) passengers seated. This vehicle is wheel chair accessible. The following is an aprox. schedule by …

The lights are on, the snow is melting and services are restored — we weathered (the worst) of the storm. Not one of us did it alone. We had National Grid, Red Cross, town employees, volunteers and most importantly, our friends, neighbors and the community. It is our neighbors who picked up the shovels, pushed our cars out of snow, watched our children or maybe just listened. WHDH-TV is predicting three or more inches of snow early Thursday morning. The National Weather Service also says Portsmouth could see three inches of snow this morning. WHDH's Chris Lambert writes on his weather blog: "We catch a two day break before more snow tracks toward New England overnight Wednesday and Thursday morning. Looks like a quick hitter with a few inches of snow possible from Worcester to Boston, with lighter amounts north, and heavier amounts south. Indications are most of SE Mass will be in the 3-6" range. It's an early look at this storm, so the bands may get adjusted north or south. The Department of Health is asking private well owners to boil their water as a safety precaution.
The following is from a press release. Due to the excessive snow from the winter storm and from rainfall on Monday, some private wells may be impacted. Four Portsmouth residents - two adults and two children - jumped to their safety Friday night after a fire trapped them inside their Park Avenue home during the height of the storm.
Seven Portsmouth residents are lucky to be alive after a fire broke out outside a Park Avenue home during the height of the 2013 blizzard Friday night. In what could be described as the worst nightmare for Portsmouth firefighters, a 911 call came in at 11:29 p.m. After a couple hours of lights flickering, most Portsmouth residents lost power for good around 10:30 p.m. Friday. The 911 call described one of the worst possible scenarios for firefighters. A house was on fire. Seven people were trapped inside. All Portsmouth fire crews rushed to the fire at 88 Cove St. in Island Park. However, due to blizzard conditions, the response time was delayed. "It took us 12 minutes to get to the scene. Friday's blizzard took out most of the power for Portsmouth residents, leaving customers in the dark and cold for days. National Grid managed to restore a majority of Portsmouth residents' power by Saturday night, leaving about 255 still without power as of Sunday evening. Power was expected to be restored by Monday night for the remainder of customers without power. We want to know what you thought about the response and restoration efforts. Friday's blizzard dumped almost two feet of snow on Portsmouth, which left the roads impassable, knocked down trees and shut off power to all of Aquidneck Island.
