Monday The Portsmouth Fire Department asks all residents to help clear snow from fire hydrants today. The Portsmouth EMA says, as of Monday morning, 297 Portsmouth residents remain without power. "Power should be restored to Riverside and nearby streets in Island Park by 2 p.m. today. Every customer in Portsmouth should have their power restored no later than 11 p.m. this evening," according to the EMA. Debris removal plans are underway to address the large volume of fallen trees and branches on the ground. Any debris that is creating an immediate hazard should be reported to the Public Works department at 683-0362 or the Portsmouth Fire department at 683-1200. The incoming winter storm is officially the Blizzard of 2013.
The National Weater Service upgraded the winter to a blizzard watch on Thursday morning. The NWS predicts snow accumulation of 18 to 24 inches. Snow is expected to begin on Friday morning and increase in intensity by the afternoon. Around the coast, the snow could switch to rain in the afternoon, which would impact accumulation. Strong winds of possible hurricane force are also expected Friday night into Saturday. Wind speeds could reach 25-35 mph, with gusts up to 75 mph. NWS warns that travel may become nearly impossible due to blowing and drifting snow. What is a Blizzard? A blizzard watch means there is a potential for considerable falling and/or blowing snow, explains the NWS. Winds or gusts are over 35 mph and visibilities below…

Here are some ways to give wild birds the food, water and shelter they need to survive a storm.
On Sunday morning as the snow began to fall the birds were out foraging for food, trying to store lots of calories before the storm. There were hundreds of starlings in the open patches of grass, scavenging for insects or seeds. Robins were in the branches of the Winterberry Holly, or Ilex verticillata, gobbling up the red berries. To survive a storm like this, the birds need to keep their body temperatures up, which means they need to expend little energy and consume lots of food. They also need to find some type of shelter in the worst parts of the storm. Nesting boxes, thick shrubs or brush piles can give them the cover they need. I used to designate an area in my yard as wild in order to provide shelter and cover for the birds. My yard…

Island Park residents take to the hills for sledding Monday at Hathaway Elementary School.
Some Island Park youths used Sunday and Monday's blizzard as an opportunity to make some cash by shoveling driveways. Other residents decided to tackle the hills at Hathaway Elementary School for the season's first sledding experience.
