Local Artisans Display 'Cornucopia' of Hand-Crafted Goods

The Pennfield School hosts 59 vendors at the 19th Cornucopia Professional Fine Arts and Craft Sale this past weekend.

Pieces of coastal driftwood made into mirrors. Homemade fudge sauces. Copper wall art. Jewelry, scarves, hats, pottery. The mediums were vast and the materials boundless, but the art of crafting and creating brought together some of the best and brightest artisians in Rhode Island this past weekend at the 19th Cornucopia Professional Fine Arts and Craft Sale. All proceeds from the event benefitted the Pennfield School's arts education programs and the John Pedrick Faculty Endowment Fund. The Pennfield School is a non-profit, non-denominational, co-educational independent school with nursery through eighth grade. Artists set up shop for the 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. event on Saturday in the gymnasium, lunch room, music room and lobby. Below are …

Ice Age Passion Melts Artist's Heart

Middletown resident and author Barbara Olins Alpert discusses her love of cave drawings.

What do Salvador Dali, Harry Houdini and cavemen have in common? A lot more than you might think, according to Middletown resident and artist Barbara Olins Alpert. All three were masters of illusion, says Alpert, who recently spoke about her book and Ice Age art at the Portsmouth Arts Guild. "They (prehistoric artists) knew exactly what they were doing," Alpert says. "They knew how one's eye could be tricked." Entitled "The Artist's Mind: From the Ice Age to Now," the event at the Portsmouth Arts Guild drew a large audience. Alpert has penned "The Creative Ice Age Brain," which examines how art from the Ice Age art links with contemporary art. Measuring Mediums

An inside look at the exhibit "Measuring and Collecting," being held now through Aug. 14 at Montanaro Gallery, 2967 East Main Road.

Just off East Main Road, set amidst densely canopied trees and old hand-laid stone walls is "Montanaro Contemporary Arts," an art gallery space owned and operated by director, and former Aquidneck Island resident, Michael Montanaro. Turning off the road and pulling behind the gallery, one can nearly tune out the din of automobiles rushing by. The setting of the gallery is almost bucolic, save the traffic and shopping plaza next door, and is further punctuated by the building it is housed in - an old converted barn complete with enormous sliding doors. Entering the barn, one must climb the two flights of stairs to reach the gallery itself.  The space is a refreshing and welcome departure from the typical square room with whitewashed walls …
