In the latest transport from a 4-year partnership, the Potter League has received 21 new dogs from the Mitchell County Humane Rescue in North Carolina, of which 12 have already been claimed and 9 remain available for adoption.
Twenty-one dogs rescued from a North Carolina shelter recently made the long road trip north and safely arrived at the Potter League for Animals, where the non-profit organization hopes to continue matching up the southern dogs with new homes and families throughout Aquidneck Island and New England. As part of a four-year-old transport partnership with its North Carolina sister shelter, the Mitchell County Humane Rescue, the Potter League has reportedly rescued more than 750 dogs from out-of-state shelters like Mitchell County, as a way to help ease the burden of overcrowded shelters down south—where fewer country animals are spayed and neutered and more dogs are at risk of being euthanized. Aquidneck Island's only animal shelter to hold volunteer training the first Saturday of every month.
To say the Potter League for Animals relies heavily on volunteerism is an understatement. An astounding 500-600 active volunteers make it possible for Aquidneck Island's only animal shelter to provide the level of services and care to the large numbers of animals served, according to shelter officials. And with this Saturday's monthly volunteer orientation training session coming up, those reserves are about to grow even more. The Potter League for Animals recently announced adoption promotions to encourage the placement of older adult cats.
A sudden spike in homeless cats on Aquidneck Island has prompted the Potter League for Animals to do a big adoption push for adult cats through mid-August. By Monday, 89 cats were sheltered at the Potter League for Animals, mostly adult cats that are typically harder to re-home compared to kittens, said Christie Smith, Executive Director of the Potter League for Animals, which serves Aquidneck Island and surrounding communities. "We see more cats this time of year because of the breeding cycle that starts in the spring," Smith said, explaining that more breeding means more kittens, and more available kittens at the shelter means fewer adult cats adopted into new homes.
