Freezing temperatures made for perfect weather Wednesday for pouring concrete at the future site of the Hodges Badge wind turbine.
The Hodges Badge Co. may be a leader in manufacturing first-place medals, but the company at 1170 East Main Road hopes to score a "perfect 10" with its latest project. Hodges is in the process of constructing a wind turbine, which will be the third turbine constructed within the town of Portsmouth. The two existing turbines are located at Portsmouth High School and the Portsmouth Abbey School. Electricity generated from this nearly 150-feet tall turbine is expected to provide 100 percent of the manufacturing plant's energy supply. "It will produce 100 percent of what the factory produces each year for electricity," said Rick Hodges, president of the Hodges Badge Co. "However, the turbine will continue to produce electricity when the …

Congressional candidate David Segal stops by Portsmouth Wednesday to talk "green" jobs and listen to residents' concerns.
Congressional candidate David Segal stopped by Portsmouth Wednesday to discuss his "Green New Deal." The first stop was at the Wind Turbine Generator outside Portsmouth High School, where Segal spoke with a handful of reporters about jobs and future "green" opportunities. "Investing $100 billion in the greening of our economy over the next two years would create an estimated two million jobs nationwide," Segal said. "This will put people to work today building the foundation for a strong economy in years to come, while moving us toward energy security and significantly lowering our greenhouse emissions." Segal, 30, is campaigning for the House of Represenatives' first district seat currently held by Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy. Other …

Could Portsmouth see a third wind turbine in the future? Proven success from the current two says "yes," as well as the possibility of other "green" projects.
When it comes to kicking the nation's oil addiction, the winds of change have been blowing through Portsmouth for nearly a decade. Over the past several years, the town has become Rhode Island's leader in sustainable energy generation. Portsmouth's "Green Revolution" began in 2004, when Portsmouth Abbey's Benedictine monks approved the purchase of a $1.2 million wind turbine to power its Cory's Lane campus. The turbine, which went online in 2006, rises 241 feet and is visible from miles around. It has an output of 1.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity – enough to supply approximately 200 homes. That turbine was a catalyst for the town's next large scale wind power generator – this one involving the entire community. In late 2004, the …
