Portsmouth police made the following arrests this weekend. Oxycodone, cocaine allegedly found on Fall River couple Two Fall River residents were arrested early Tuesday morning after police were called to investigate a suspicious vehicle on Norseman Drive. The vehicle's occupants, Chelsea Cote, 19, and Richard Souza, 29, both of Fall River, were arrested around 1:30 a.m. Cote, the vehicle's operator, allegedly gave a false name to police when questioned. A female police officer then searched Cote and found a cigarette box hidden under her shirt. The box contained a pill, which was later identified as Oxycodone. Cote was charged with possession of a controlled substance, Oxycodone, and obstruction of an officer in the execution of duty. …

Joshua Despres, the teen arrested after allegedly using racial slurs during a high school fight, says he was bullied for months and school administrators did nothing to prevent it.
The Little Compton teenager who was arrested Tuesday following a fight at Portsmouth High School is speaking out and telling his side of the story. Patch sat down with 18-year-old Joshua Despres and his mother at their Little Compton home Friday. Despres says he was the victim of bullying for months and that he feels school administrators did nothing to prevent it. The high school senior talks about the fight in the video at right. A Portsmouth man was arrested Thursday for allegedly assaulting a 20-year-old woman. Douglas Silvia, 49, of Davey Lane, Portsmouth, was arrested and charged with domestic, simple assault. Silvia apparently became involved in an argument with a 20-year-old Portsmouth woman at his residence. During the argument, Silvia allegedly struck the woman in the back of the head with his hand. Silvia was arrested and held overnight at the police station. He was arraigned the next morning in district court.

Portsmouth firefighters say a cigarette is to blame for a garage fire Wednesday afternoon.
A cigarette is believed to be the cause of a garage fire discovered Wednesday afternoon on Turnpike Avenue. Portsmouth Fire Capt. Michael O'Brien says the cause of the fire at 270 Turnpike Ave. was due to "careless discarding of smoking materials." The smoking materials was a cigarette, O'Brien said. Firefighters responded around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to the one-story house on Turnpike Avenue and quickly extinguished the flames in the garage. The fire appeared to have been burning for "some time," O'Brien said. No injuries were reported. The house sustained no major damage, but the garage sustained structural damage. Only a cat, named Brownie, and a dog, a husky-golden retriever mix named Maggie, were home at the time of the fire. Both …

Portsmouth police say a Little Compton teen allegedly acted disorderly long after a fight at the high school.
Portsmouth police have provided more details into the Tuesday arrest of a Little Compton teen. Joshua Despres, 18, of Little Compton, was arrested Tuesday around 2 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. The arrest stemmed from a fight that occurred Monday morning at Portsmouth High School. Despres, a student at the school, apparently became involved in an argument with a fellow student. During the argument, Despres allegedly yelled racial slurs at the 17-year-old man. The 17-year-old then allegedly struck Despres in the face. The teen was also arrested and charged with assault. His case will be referred to Family Court. Police are investigating how a stolen vehicle ended up in Weaver's Cove.
Police are now investigating how a vehicle stolen out of Newport ended up submerged in Weaver's Cove this weekend. A 2007 Toyota Camry was found submerged Sunday at 12:30 a.m. in the water near the Weaver's Cove boat ramp, which is located off Burma Road. No one was found inside the vehicle. Divers from the Portsmouth Fire Department were called to the scene. "There was no evidence of victims inside the vehicle," said Portsmouth police Lt. Brian Peters. A child seat was located inside the Camry, which was towed out of the water. The vehicle was reportedly stolen in the City of Newport. The incident remains under investigation by the Newport Police Department.

A Portsmouth woman returned home Wednesday to find her house filled with smoke and garage on fire.
One Portsmouth woman says she's fortunate and very thankful she returned home just in time Wednesday before a garage fire spread to her attached house. "I'm very thankful I came home when I did," said Erin McGee, daughter of homeowners, Patrick and Maureen McGee. Erin arrived around 11:30 a.m. at 270 Turnpike Ave. to find her house filled with smoke and flames inside the garage. She quickly called 911. "It was perfect timing and perfect it was inside the garage and not the house," she said. McGee talks more about what she saw in the video at right.
