David J. Hughes, 66, of Portsmouth died April 21, 2013 with his wife, Barbara Burns, by his side. David was born in Aberbargoed, Wales, in 1946. David was a graduate of MIT and received his master's in biological oceanography from Johns Hopkins. As an oceanographer, David worked at Bigelow Labs, Woods Hole and the University of Delaware before making the transition to technology. David worked at Digital Equipment Corporation and Hewlett Packard for 20 years. On his retirement, he returned to his university and biology roots at the University of Rhode Island where he worked with the CEEC, lectured in the Master Gardener Certification Program and earned a place in the URI Master Gardener Hall of Fame. Lynne M. Smith, 96, of Middletown, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at St. Clare Home Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Robert Smith. Born in Fall River, MA on January 22, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Helen (Dziedic) Mikolazyk. She was employed as an optometric assistant with Dr. Peter Eudenbach, OD for many years. She was an avid gardener and talented seamstress. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at 8 a.m. from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Richard D. Boiani, 84, of Newport, died Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Lorraine Anne (Lamarre) Boiani. Boiani was a 1946 graduate of Rogers High School. After school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving two different times once in Italy, during World War II and then re-enlisted during the Korean War. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 25, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway Newport. His funeral will be held on Friday, April 26, at 9 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport. Hillie “Boats” Ackerman, 91, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, April 14, 2013 at Newport Hospital surrounded by his family.
Hillie “Boats” Ackerman, 91, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, April 14, 2013 at Newport Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Betty (Hodgkins) Ackerman. Mr. Ackerman was in the Navy during WWII and the Korean War and after 27 years of service retired as a BMCM. He went on to work at the Navy base in special services as superintendent and was in charge of the marina periodically as well. Ernest L. Needham, MSGT, USMC. Retired, died April 15, 2013 at the John Clarke Nursing Center. He was the beloved husband of Patricia Ruth (Weaver) Needham. They had been married 27 years. He was a proud Marine and served his country for 22 years. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from HMX-1 (Marine One) at Quantico, VA. The rest of his military career was spent in the Pacific. His love of aviation continued in civilian life having worked for Agusta International and NAVPRO at Sikorsky Aircraft. B. Eileen (O’Brien) Gleeson, 88, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2013, at home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Gleeson was a Registered Nurse for over 40 years. She graduated from Nursing School in 1942 and retired as the Clinical Director at the Charlton Hospital in 1983. After she retired from nursing, she obtained her Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration from the Salve Regina University and became an Assistant Professor there. She was a member of the delegation of Health Services Administrators who were invited to study the Health Delivery System in China. Eileen was very active civically as well. The Rev. Hébert Winslow Bolles, 88, of 45 DeArruda Terrace, Portsmouth, died at home, surrounded by his family after a long illness on April 6, 2013. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Bambi) Sands Elliot. In 1962, Hébert returned to active duty as a chaplain for the destroyer Squadron DESDIV 122 in Newport, a highlight being the last "Good Will Cruise" circumnavigating Africa in 1963. He was the Chaplain at the Chelsea Naval Hospital in Boston, MA. He served as Battalion Chaplain of the 2/26 Marines in Vietnam, 1966-67 and was awarded the Bronze Star with a combat “V.” Beginning in 1968, he was stationed at NAS Norfolk, VA then at Argentia, Newfoundland, and finally served as the Senior Chaplain at NETC Newport, RI. Geraldine Savidge Sterne, 82, of Newport, died Monday, April 8, 2013, at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. Beloved daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, she died after a long illness. Born in Teaneck, NJ, on Jan. 2, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Michael Savidge and Eva (Opet) Savidge. She moved to Manhattan as a young woman and briefly worked in radio and television before embarking on a career as a public relations executive in the fashion industry. John died peacefully on April 5, 2013. He is survived by his wife Jane E. Corbishley, his three sons, John Jr., Matthew and Mark Corbishley and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. John was a general agent for Mass Mutual Insurance retiring in 1996. He was the CEO of “The Corbishley Financial Group” and served as the president for 10 years. He was a dedicated volunteer and active sailor, as a volunteer he was on many committees and volunteered in Providence Schools, Battleship Massachusetts and the RI Foundation. John “Duke” Reed passed away quietly at home on April 3, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.
John “Duke” Reed died at home on April 3, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 24, 1928 on Staten Island, New York to the late Charles & Helen (Baum) Reed. At the end of the World War II, he signed up with the US Navy and was assigned to the first crew of the USS Tortuga. He served in the South Pacific and the Hawaiian Islands as a radioman. While stationed in Newport he met the love of his life Elizabeth “Sis” DeSantis. They married in 1953. He continued working on the US Navy Base here in Newport and retired in 1990.
