Portsmouth High School was evacuated Wednesday for the second bomb threat in two days. What grade would you give Portsmouth school officials for how they handled the evacuation?
Portsmouth High School students received early dismissal from school Wednesday after the school was evacuated for a bomb threat. The threat, a note referencing an explosive device, was the second found in two days. Portsmouth High School officials evacuated the school immediately and called Portsmouth police. Students and faculty were not allowed back inside the building to collect belongings for more than an hour. We want to know what you think about how Portsmouth school officials handled the evacuation. We asked the question on Portsmouth Patch's Facebook page Thursday. Here's what a few had to say: Mary Ann Oesterle Smith No it was a mess! Chris Pierce Farley From the standpoint of communication I think that they did a good job. I am…

The party is scheduled for Sunday, May 19, at the Rosecliff Mansion in Newport.
We are excited to announce that Newport Patch and The Newport Buzz have teamed up with family and friends of Newport resident Heather Abbott to host a welcome home party for Heather on Sunday, May 19, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Rosecliff Mansion in Newport. It will be an afternoon of live music, food, cash bar and community. The City of Newport will conduct a brief ceremony to honor and welcome Heather back to Newport. After Heather was seriously injured in the Boston Marathon bombing, doctors were forced to remove her left leg from the knee down. Her smile and positive attitude has inspired not only the Newport community, but all Americans, as the country recovers from that tragic day. The event is free and open to the public. An …
Here's the story of Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.
Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts. But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not participate …

I'm hoping to drive my old beater into the ground before we need to get another car, but I'm on the lookout. What's your next car going to be?
My wife and I drive a perfectly good 2002 Nissan Sentra with 127,318 miles on it. "Stella" has four wheels and gets us from Point A to Point B. We've reached the stage in the life of the car where we don't repair body damage (as you can tell from the accompanying photo). I'm ashamed for my Dad to see it. But hey, it's paid for. Even though I'd love to get 200K miles out of Stella, she has some mechanical problems, like a seized bolt that has left the transmission fluid unchangeable for about eight years. She could conk out any old day. So we've been on the lookout for our next car. I'm paying attention to car commercials, asking friends about their cars. You know the feeling. We're looking for something that gets good gas mileage, and is …
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev wrote a note on the boat in Watertown where police found him hiding.
Boston Marathon Bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev left a goodbye note claiming that the bombings were retribution for the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and said he and his brother were martyrs. Tsarnaev scrawled the note on the inside of the boat where police found and arrested him, according to a report on CBS News Thursday morning. According the CBS report, the note stated: Bullets pierced the wall of the boat where the note was found. The shots were fired after a police officer covering the side of the boat spotted Tsarnaev come up out of the tarp and thought he had a bomb, according to the report. The note may help prosecutors' case against Tsarnaev. While he admitted to being behind the bombings, the statements were made …
Winds are expected to pick up to at least 30 mph in the afternoon.
The National Weather Service is warning of the potential for brush fires in the area Thursday afternoon and night. Counties across Eastern and Central Massachusetts and Rhode Island are under the fire warning. Winds are expected to pick up to at least 30 mph in the afternoon. The wind coupled with “low relative humidities” will cause the risk of fire, according to the NWS.
The following is based on reports from the Portsmouth Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
Jay Catalan, 50, 34 Hillside Road, Portsmouth, was arrested, and charged with driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a chemical test after his truck landed on its side at Cumberland Farms Monday. Portsmouth police and fire officials responded around 4:10 p.m. to the Cumberland Farms near Sprague Street and East Main Road for a report of a "rollover." Police say Catalan was operating the vehicle southbound on East Main Road when he attempted to make a turn onto Sprague Street. Catalan lost control of the vehicle, which landed on its side. Officers detected a strong aroma of alcohol coming from the driver. Catalan was transported by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital, where he allegedly refused a Breathalyzer test. He was …
