Wow Tuna....you must be a rocket scientist or something. How about we compare the town's populationRead More during the same time frame. Think you'll find a difference? The lane "diet" has had a statistically proven effect for the better. Sorry if facts don't support your little rant. Both our police dept and fire dept are reporting FEWER accidents since the new lane structure went into effect. Are they lying? Or are you just plain stupid. RTFA!
Tuna man July 21, 2014 at 10:15 pm
Hummm seems that one here just doesn't get it. I doubt you have lived in the town as long as I haveRead More and who is saying anything about local population? It has always been about traffic that is passing through the town not the locals. Oh and here is a hint for you Old Townie. I worked for the town for 30 years and yes I know the town and I know very well all of the roads in the town and the accident rates. The amount of time that has passed since this started is so small that one cannot judge if it will be a success or a failure just like that last time they did this. Give it another year and then compare the rates but until then there is no way it can be declared a success.

I don't want to add fuel to the fire, but the "trial lane change" has been in effect forRead More about 2 months and there's a photo of at least one accident. I thought the police said there were only 2 accidents in the 12 months prior to the change. Since the" trial lane change" began, I would venture to say there was "bridge work" that created substantial delays at least once or twice each week. Even with police helping to direct (and they don't always get the call, as was the case last Thursday) traffic backs up in all five (yes 5) directions trying to get through the intersection.

Hmmmmmmmmm. They did not stand up suddenly drunk, that bartender served them to intoxication andRead More covered their ass by calling the cops....

Out of curiosity, why are mug shots sometimes posted in Patch police arrest articles (e.g., theseRead More two schlubs: http://tiverton.patch.com/groups/around-town/p/vehicle-break-in-suspects-arrested) but other times not? In the case of these two drunken tootsies, are the mug shots not available from the Portsmouth PD or were they not published for some other reason?

Common sense??? I'll make it easy to understand. LEAVE THE DOG HOME!!!!!!! Enough said!!!
morlamweb July 12, 2014 at 03:04 pm
I agree, Stephanie! "Common" sense should be to leave your dog at home. What Cai andRead More Michael don't seem to get is that temperatures in a parked car get very hot very quickly, particularly in the hot summer sun. Even four minutes in the shade with the windows open can make it uncomfortably hot in the car. Believe me, if I see a dog trapped in a hot car, I WILL report it. Responsible dog owners do NOT leave their "beloved" dogs in the car!
Samantha Marley August July 14, 2014 at 01:01 pm
My car doesn't have AC. If I can drive around for hours without getting too hot, or sit in theRead More direct sunlight with the windows open and not overheat, I think a dog can survive three minutes with ice water and windows down.

Unless they enforce the law it doesn't matter what the penalty is!

Honestly, in 1989 I was caught in Portsmouth throwing a soda can out of my car, coming around theRead More bend at the overlook near Kaiser Aluminum. I had to go to court and paid a $50.00 fine and it is still on my record. On the very rare occasion I have some interaction with law enforcement it is VERY embarrassing, now that I am older and know better. EVERY police officer WILL enforce that law IF the offence is observed. BELIEVE IT......

It's now illegal in Rhode Island to leave a dog in a sweltering vehicle. File photo.
MillicentBroderick July 8, 2014 at 09:47 pm
There are a fair number of people who are genuinely unaware of the danger, there are people who doRead More not like to be told how to run their lives and that extends to the creature in the car. I have on 4 occasions nicely and politely informed a person that it would be harmful to their dog to leave it in the car, as the dog had been. I have never had anyone say thank you I did not realize. I have been threatened with violence and basically run off. So what does that say. That is why it needs to be a law..so there is no "discussion". awful.
Samantha Marley August July 14, 2014 at 12:35 pm
If it's illegal to leave pets outside, we should be able to take them into the stores with us. MyRead More dog is an adorable long-haired Chihuahua. Everyone on earth wants to pet him and hug him, and for that reason I can't leave him outside a car -- he's very nervous and I wouldn't put it past him to nip or bite someone who tries to pet him. He's safer in the car. I also leave all the windows open, leave him loosely tied to the seat to leave him enough room to move around, and leave water with ice in it for him. This is all for a two second run into the store, literally never more than three minutes. I just think it all comes down to common sense. Don't leave anything in the car with all the windows up. Roll them down or put on the AC. However, I don't think any random person should be able to smash in my windows that are already mostly rolled down to get to a dog who is perfectly fine hah. This just seems sorta ridiculous. Obviously, don't hurt animals. I am actually huge on animal rights. This just seems excessive.
Kellie Jackson July 21, 2014 at 02:38 pm
Samantha, no. Just no. You shouldn't be allowed to bring your pets into stores. If you have to goRead More shopping, leave your pets at HOME. They don't belong in stores, making messes that most customers leave for the associates to clean up. If it's a service animal, that's fine. No other exceptions...

I know that this is going to be taken the wrong way, and I don't mean it to be. I think that isRead More extremely inspiring in this day and age, that folks even bother looking to help strangers and neighbors these days. I have to second guess whether to stop for a cup of lemonade at a stand that a kid has on the corner. Or whether it is safe to give a ride to a man OR a woman. FYI (My wife and I also make it a habit to look out and help others. Physically as well as monetarily.) My question is, as there have been a few instances like this as of late, have these folks provided for themselves and their families with renters or home insurance? This is a great protection to help them get back on their feet as quickly as possible. They may have, I don't know. To me, it still begs the question. And no, I have not been in this situation, but, I have done everything in my power to prepare for it. Again, I know that this is going to be taken the wrong way, and I don't mean it to be. And no, I DO NOT SELL INSURANCE.

Point taken Andrea however you weren't there either. Two drinks at the most? 2 drinks can containRead More quite a bit of alcohol depending upon what they are. There are beers with 11% alcohol. And why wouldn't the person who was driving just say he was driving? What reason would there be for 2 adults to say the other was behind the wheel? Yes we will see when the investigation is finished. Although this has nothing to do with the boating accident I feel I must address it. Why do you doubt I've never driven after a drink at dinner? That tells me something about you. If you find it that difficult to believe that another person wouldn't drive after a drink, it leads me to believe that you would. If I am the driver I do not have an alcoholic beverage, period. It's the responsible thing to do.

Andrea, While I think it's wonderful that you defend your friends, I'd like to point out that yourRead More faith maybe a little misplaced. "each of whom told police the other was behind the wheel." 2 men on the boat, both claiming the other was operating the boat. So what does that mean? One of them is lying. As to competence, by the owners admission, he was navigating by radar and GPS at night in waters he did not know. Therefore, his speed should have been reduced. This was not an "accident", it was a case of operator error and negligence. I don't know what "facts" you think you know, but the evidence points to incompetence and alcohol use. And as a result, severe injuries.
